Karagoz ("Black Eye") is the name for the traditional Turkish shadow puppet theater. This type of puppet is a flat figure that is cut from camel or donkey leather that is then coated with oil to make it translucent. It is then perforated, painted, and mounted perpendicularly at the end of sticks. A white sheet is hung as a screen, a strong light put behind it, and the puppets, pressed gently to the light-source side of the sheet. A puppeteer then uses sticks to make them move.
