On the instructions of Sigurd Jorsalfar, the cathedral was commenced in 1125 under Bishop Reinald from Winchester, England, and so like Winchester is also dedicated to Saint Swithun. It was built in an Anglo Norman style of architecture with the help of English craftsmen. After a fire of 1272 the choir was rebuilt in Gothic style circa 1300. It is the only Norwegian church of the middle ages to retain its original lines.
