Description

Rhododendron arborescens (“var georgiana”) Upright deciduous shrubs with smooth stems. The leaves are shiny dark green on the upper surface and very colorful in the autumn. The fragrant flowers (early to mid-summer) are white to white flushed pink with a long narrow tube and spreading lobes. The Smooth Azalea is a fine late-blooming, fragrant species for sun or the woodland garden. Native to the mountains of the eastern USA from Pennsylvania to Alabama where it occurs from 1,000 to 5,000 ft. This is the low-elevation form from the deep south. It blooms much later in the season (typically August to September) with fragrant white flowers. These are grown from seed collected wild in Alabama. (-10\R1\6) RSBG#121sd2004
