Sinkhole: Hand-laid sandstone from the 1800s causes issue
A large sinkhole has recently opened up near St. Mary’s Catholic School in Marietta.
The sinkhole is located at the corner of Fourth Street, Fulton Street and Marion Street. The size of the hole is approximately 4 feet across and 10 feet deep, but is not growing according to Mayor Josh Schlicher.
“We were just notified about it and are working on repairing it but we have to call on an emergency contractor because we do not have the materials to repair the sinkhole in-house,” he said. “There is no definite timeline for the repair, so until then we are going to be blocking it with barrels and guardrails. We ask people to stay away from the sinkhole and will be making the street a one-way until repairs happen.”
Schlicher said the area where the sinkhole opened was made of hand laid sandstone going back about 100 years ago to the late 1800s to early 1900s.
“It’s a stone arched top culvert with concrete lining,” Schlicher said. “Due to weather, it’s just been wearing away and that’s why the sidewalk bailed.”
