Mega Man Zero News
Mega Man Zero 1 is my least favorite game of the ZX collection. In fact, when I started playing the ZXC, I jumped straight to ZX, played through it and then played through ZX Advent.
Simply put, these games are too difficult for the target audience. They target young children with bright colors and anime characters only to give them a game more difficult than the most difficult Mega Man game (1 or 3). The ZX games are designed like a Metroidvania where you'll need to defeat bosses to unlock the path forward or complete missions in a specific order to make the game less difficult. Only: you won't know what that order is till you actually play through it and then go back to replay so you can correct your errors.
Mega Man Zero is the least technologically sophisticated because it was the initial game. It's also the game with the least polish but the grandest progression: the end boss is a Copy of Mega Man in Ultimate Armor. Instead of simply granting you the powers of downed bosses, you'll get "cyberelves which give you a specific power effect, but can only be used once or require energy crystals to power them up before use. Cyber elves are hidden all over the map and many of them are easy to miss. It's also possible to give up on a mission and permanently be locked out of being able to get a cyberelf until you restart a new game.
As far as I could ascertain, getting energy tanks was nixed for this cyberelf bit and I'm not happy about it. The Mega Man games rely on their familiarity and formulaic presentation. this game breaks free of that and it's only more difficult because of it.
The boss characters are ridiculously hard to defeat. They have 2 or 3 times your health and without Energy Tanks to balance their superiority, you're likely to lose over and over again.
ZX and Advent are later games, but I feel they perfected the Mega Man formula in a way that Mega Man Zero didn't.

Not a fan of the artwork, but the gameplay is solid.
