Ridderen is the 14th book of this series and it is mostly about the sullen, lonely and very understandably sad Tristan, brother of Lene and son of Tancred and Jessica.
But as always, this series oftentimes, and mostly, focuses on the women and as such, it starts out with the overlooked and much ridiculed Hildegard, the wife of a nobleman and a current resident of the castle where Tristan works. In one night, he unknowingly gives invaluable help to both Hildegard and her terrified 13-year-old daughter, without knowing either of them or that they're related. But it becomes the start of a much, much bigger and scarier story that he could imagine.
Tangled up with the story of these two unhappy women and the tragedy that forever changes the lives of bth Hildegard and Marina - that's the daughter - and of Tristan as well, is the in some ways scarier and some ways less scary story of "Vogterne af den rette trone" and mosemændene (literally 'bog men', but I don't know if that's what you'd call them..)
And that's were Villemo, Dominic and now Ulvhedin comes in.
See, some time has passed since the previous book and Ulvhedin, though still pursued for his crimes, is essentially a good person. By unhappy chance - or happy chance, deeending on how you look at it - he has to flee, and Dominic and Villemo decide to accompany him to Denmark,, to Tristan and his ancestral home, Gabrielshus, which stands empty since all of his family have died - or so they think.
I love this part of the story. It's creepy, it's intelligent and I'm a sucker for stories that bring old folklore into it.
I thinik, I'd give this book 5 stars outright, if I didn't feel like it moves just too fast. Something is always happening and the pace is really high. Like many of the other books, the narrative is very telling and less showing, but I'd say that this book probably has, if not most, then definitely a lot of showing. And not just what happens, but also what the characters are feeling or thinking.
Honestly, this is one of my favourites in the series. I love Tristan so much. He's been hurt profoundly, his family are all dead and he's totally alone, or feels totally alone at least, until he meets Hildegard and Marina.
Speaking of which, I really love Marina's development. Even though she's mostly a side character, she is really important and she and Tristan find peace together, even though they're both pretty broken people. And that's just ... beautiful.
This book, man. This book. Like I said, it's not the characters or the plot that drags it down. It's the pace. But I can understand why it sometimes need to move a little fast, given the fact that it's only the 14th book out of a series of 47, I mean if we got all the stories in long detail, this series would not only be longer, but maybe also seem less approachable.
The end of this book also introduces most of the next generation, sort of by-the-by surprise, which is hardly a surprise given the fact that for the past 3 books we've followed Villemo (and Dominic's adventures, discovered Ulvhedin - whose parentage is revealed in this book and it just gets me every time) and now Tristan in Denmark. It's been 2 years since Villemo and Dominic set out to find Ulvhedin at the beginning of book 13, so it's not a surprise that a lot of things have happen in the mean time; people getting married, children being born. But it adds to my feeling of moving too quickly.
This book also marks the end of Isfolket living in Denmark, at least to my memory. As I only own the first 22 books, and due to it having been a while since I read the second half of the series, I can't with certainty say that it is definitively over, but for now it is. Not that they're all dead, they're just moving. And given the extreme sense of familial unity, or strong sense of and need for family at least, for Isfolket, it is hardly a surprise ... Though this series is still full of them.

From misery to joy
Tristan has had a challenging life and now more challenges is on his doorstep but maybe happiness also.
This was a story with so much pain and sorrow I did at times cry for poor Marina and Hildegard in addition to Tristan.
I love how the families meet again despite the tragic circumstances.
A little bit of love, action, supernatural and the story is a winner to me.
No unnecessary descriptions of surroundings, good dialogues
All the characters is well described and some are already familiar.
The storyline is good and the build up is keeping my interest, a happy ending is very good.
This is the 14th book in this saga and I’m still hanging on, 5 stars!
Must be read in order.

Księżna Hildegarda jest śmiertelnie chora i nie znajduje zrozumienia u swojego męża, który decyduje się ją nagminnie zdradzać. Marina, córka Hildegardy, również nie ma w życiu szczęścia, ponieważ dziewczynę regularnie odwiedza w nocy Povl Ruckelberg. Wiadomo w jakim celu i nie było to czytanie bajek na dobranoc. Podczas jednej z uczt Hildegarda z powodu choroby słabnie, a na pomoc przychodzi jej Tristan z Ludzi Lodu.
To już czternasty tom, a mimo autorka ciągle znajduje coś nowego, żeby zaprezentować w swojej książce. Tym razem głównym zagadnieniem była pedofilia oraz dalsze poszukiwanie swoich korzeni. Oczywiście nie zabrakło absurdów, które chyba zaczynają ogólnie charakteryzować książki tej autorki, a związane są one z postawą Hildegardy wobec córki i jej problemów. Absurdalne było nie informowanie jej co się dzieje oraz jakie będą tego wszystkiego następstwa. Druga część książki, jak już wspomniałam, dotyczy poszukiwania swoich korzeni, więc fabuła skupia się na postaci Ulvhedina, którego nie mogę strawić. Wyjaśnienie kim jest ta postać nie nastręcza trudności pod warunkiem, że ma się w głowie drzewo genealogiczne rodziny i pamięć do wydarzeń z poprzednich tomów. Zakończenie książki nie pozostawia złudzeń - zamykamy tę wielką "misję" Dominika, Villemo oraz Mikaela. Spełnili swoje zadanie, a teraz pora na nowych bohaterów.

Ten tom miał trochę inny klimat niż kilka poprzednich, skupiających się na Villemo i pewnie dlatego podobał mi się nieco bardziej, zwłaszcza wątek dotyczący księżnej i jej córki. Tutaj znowu Sandemo poruszyła ciężki temat, czyli pedofilię. Został on przedstawiony o wiele lepiej i z większą wrażliwością niż przy okazji innego ciężkiego tematu w poprzednim tomie Sagi, więc to na plus (chociaż przyznam że nie byłabym zła gdyby autorka została jedynie przy chorobie księżnej i nie dokładała traum jej córce).
Sama książka jest dosyć melancholijna jeśli chodzi o nastrój, jednak w obu wątkach nie brakowało akcji. Bardziej podobałm mi się wątek księżnej, ale ten drugi z sektą był również interesujący. No i nietypowy wątek miłosny, bardzo subtelny i delikatny, był bardzo dobrą odskocznią od tych gwałtownych romansów, w jakie lubią się wdawać Ludzie Lodu.
Sama książka jest dosyć melancholijna jeśli chodzi o nastrój, jednak w obu wątkach nie brakowało akcji. Bardziej podobałm mi się wątek księżnej, ale ten drugi z sektą był również interesujący. Tom czternasty utrzymuje dobry kierunek, o którym wspominałam przy poprzedniej części. Ckliwe wątki romansowe zastąpione zostały bardziej poważnymi, momentami nawet dramatycznymi (jak na tę sagę) losami bohaterów. W tej części również dowiemy się kim tak naprawdę jest groźny Ulvhedin, a rozwiązanie zagadki będzie dość zaskakujące, szczególnie jeżeli nie pamięta się dokładnie wydarzeń z poprzednich części, tak jak ja ich nie pamiętam.
Kociooka ekipa niestety wypełniła już swoje zadanie, a niestety, bo zdążyłam się już do nich przyzwyczaić i może nawet polubić, chociaż Villemo wcześniej trochę mnie irytowała. Z wiekiem nabrała dziewczyna trochę ogłady, na szczęście.
Ciekawa jestem czyje losy zostaną rozwinięte w następnej części, więc zabieram się za czytanie kolejnego tomu.

Ett litet lyft från de tidigare böckerna, kanske främst för att Villermo mycket spelar andrafiolen här. Hon har inte så mycket att göra utöver att bistå Tristan med att reda ut kvinnosakerna kring Marina. Jag förvånades över att ”mossmännen” (hur fånigt uttrycket än är) verkar vara ”riktiga” och inte något abstrakt hokus pokus bara. Jag tycker också det är relativt positivt att Sandemo väljer att ”flytta hem” den danska sidan av familjen. Det riskerar att sprida ut storyn för mycket med ättlingar både i Sverige och Danmark utöver Norge.

I liked it well enough. The intrigue is exciting, the characters makes you want to know more about them and it's very exciting to follow the different branches of the Ice People and how they intertwine with each other.

Denna var riktigt bra!
Allt kom samman för denna generation och vänskapen och kärleken som växt upp mellan Tristan och de båda damerna var väldigt fin.
Var också i denna bok samt den tidigare som jag verkligen kände att jag kunde gilla Villemo igen!

Börjar rätt tråkigt och Tristan är en rätt grå karaktär. Men boken blev bättre och hade glömt allt med mossmännen. Tråkigt man inte fick mer förklaring till dem, när det ändå var den stora kampen Ulvhedin skulle utkämpa..

Niezła część. Fajna zagadka kryminalna w duńskiej części rodziny. Tu chyba kończą się niektóre wątki np. Villemo i jej pokolenia. Na koniec wchodzimy w rok 1700.

This one was about Tristan. It made quite a decent love story, compared to the previous ones. Now every character from this generation had a closure.

Tristan er en ensom og sørgelig sjel det er veldig interessant og lese om. Jeg gir denne boken topp karakter av den grunn at karakterene i denne boken er særegne og de fleste av dem sliter med sine problemer/skavanker. Støtten og kjærligheten de gir hverandre er deilig å lese om. Boken holder koken og jeg synes ikke den har kjedelige deler.

I really liked to read about Tristan, this lonely and sorrowful soul. Villemo is involved in the story, but not as much as before and that makes me happy - since she started to get on my nerves in the previous book.
