Home to the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet since opening in 2008, the Opera House has a packed schedule year-round. A production of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly opens September 3. Reported by John Wogan

Norwegian shipbuilders constructed the sweeping oak “Wave Wall,” which curves through the lobby in a liquid-like form—an homage to the building’s waterside location.

Oak timber is also used for part of the floor and the ceiling, exhibiting the Opera House’s Nordic design influence.

The rooftop of the Opera House consists of 36,000 slabs of white Italian marble. Known as The Carpet, it’s become a popular outdoor meeting spot during sunny weather.
