Norwegian Elkhound

The Norwegian Elkhound was bred to be able to withstand cold conditions and to have enough energy for a long journey. These dogs are very intelligent but bore easily. The point? With their combination of intelligence and energy, the Norwegian Elkhound needs almost constant stimulation. Are you up for that?

Size:
45-60 lbs.
Exercise Requirements:
Norwegian Elkhounds can survive on one long walk per day, but to really satisfy them and keep them in top form, a 2-hour walk is ideal. They are bred to be active all day in cold weather, so they have lots of energy to burn. Runs (either off leash or as your jogging partner) will help burn off the Elkhounds’ boundless energy.
Mess Factor:
These are larger dogs with thick coats who like to be active — there will be shedding, slobbering and dirty paws in your future, if you choose this breed.
Barking and Volume:
Norwegian Elkhounds use their sharp, loud bark to warn people they’re there. This makes them great watch dogs. They are not overly woofy in all situations, though.
Training Requirements:
Norwegian Elkhounds are somewhat stubborn, so while they may understand your commands and do well in training, they won’t always obey your instructions (particularly if they are bored of performing the same tricks over and over again. They are smart enough to know when they’ve had enough!) A basic puppy class will do but they may enjoy further obedience classes for the mental stimulation.
Ongoing Costs:
Health Factors: This breed can experience hip dysplasia, renal problems and progressive retinal atrophy. *A responsible breeder can help minimize the risk of genetic disorders.
Grooming: Home grooming is adequate.
Training: Basic training. A puppy class is sufficient.
Exercise: May need to consider a dog walker.
Grooming Requirements:
Regular weekly brushing is sufficient care for Norwegian Elkhounds. You should brush daily during periods of heavy shedding.
Kid Compatibility:
Norwegian Elkhounds are noted for being great with children. They’re bold and energetic, though, so their size can be a little much for small children as they may not know their own strength. Early socialization is key.
Longevity:
12-16 years.
Friednliness Towards Animals:
Once a Norwegian Elkhound is socialized with other dogs properly, it is unlikely you’ll experience any issues. They’re generally very friendly and love any new playmates as a source to help them burn some energy.
Friednliness Towards People:
Norwegian Elkhounds are, by nature, people lovers. They love attention and making friends with everybody.
BE PREPARED FOR:
Never-ending energy and enough exercise to keep you both in top shape.
