Lucas Leiva makes top 10 of Premier League's slowest players

The Brazilian has never relied on pace throughout his nine years at Anfield - and it is just as well according to a new study

Lucas is sixth in the Premier League's slowest 10

The Premier League's top 10 slowest players have been revealed by Opta - and the list features Liverpool 's Lucas Leiva.

The Brazilian has never relied on pace throughout his nine years at Anfield, but the midfielder features more regularly as a centre-back for the Reds these days under Jurgen Klopp.

General footballing wisdom claims that you move further back the pitch the older you get, and that can certainly be said of Lucas, who primarily operates as a centre-back for the Reds these days, despite starting his career in Brazil as an attacking midfielder for Gremio.

Despite being just 29, Lucas is the sixth slowest player in England's top flight, according to data from Opta who have revealed the top speed each player has reached during a league game this term.

According to the research, Lucas has clocked up a top speed of 29.37km/h to see him sit just below Everton's Gareth Barry, but fast enough to avoid the slowest five.

In a result which may not come as a surprise to some Liverpool fans, ex-Red Charlie Adam is officially the slowest in the Premier League, edging out Stoke teammate Peter Crouch, while Cesc Fabregas, Shaun Maloney and Olivier Giroud make up the top five.

10. Andy King - Leicester City (Top speed: 29.7km/h)
