Liverpool 1-0 Manchester City player ratings - Gini's perfect day as Milner leads supporting cast

Kristian Walsh runs the rule over a huge win for Jurgen Klopp's side at Anfield

Liverpool FC v Manchester City - The match in 90 seconds

Simon Mignolet 7

His kicking is getting better, you know. Still a few moments to make the Kop cringe with the ball at his feet, but then played keepie-ups past Sergio Aguero 40 yards from goal. Held what he had to.

Nathaniel Clyne 7

City never really looked creative down Liverpool's right side, and Clyne had a big part of play in that. He can't really improve his work on the back foot. Had a sight of goal in the second half, and that's the side of his game he can.

Ragnar Klavan 8

Booked for bringing down Aguero early on to compound a jittery start, but has performed really well otherwise. Even more impressive given the tightrope he was walking, timing his challenges to perfection.

Dejan Lovren 8

Won a firm header early on to set the tone. Aguero has had him worried at times but never with the ball. Still sometimes straddles the line of brilliance and bedlam. It was more the former on this occasion.

James Milner 9

His battle with Sterling by far the most engaging of this enthralling contest. Had the measure of the former Liverpool man throughout in a near-perfect showing. Also threw one on Firmino's instep, which should have led to a chance, if not for a poor touch from the forward.

Jordan Henderson 8

Snapped into tackles and dictated the tempo in the first half, as has become customary for the captain. Was excellent for the time he was on the pitch and his enforced substitution impacted upon the Reds.

Emre Can 7

Fired one just past the post with a curling effort, and was generally impressive. Booked in the second half but only served to heighten a maturity in his game from that moment. Offered plenty of physicality but didn't rely upon it. Using the ball well, too, but needs to use it quicker.

Adam Lallana 8

He has it all, at the moment. Out of position on the left of the front three – though he did make his name there, remember – and was every bit as dangerous, on and off the ball. A good cross for Wijnaldum for the opener, and helped his side when under pressure in the second half with clever feet.
