David Moyes has picked up where Alex Ferguson left off - by tracking Sheffield United’s £4million-rated centre-back Harry Maguire.

New Manchester United boss Moyes wants to boost his central defensive options and is eyeing-up a swoop for Maguire when the January transfer window opens .

Moyes, who succeeded Fergie at the Old Trafford helm two months ago, has Serbian skipper Nemanja Vidic and former England star Rio Ferdinand both into their 30s.

He is keen to bring in another youngster to challenge Phil Jones and Chris Smalling for the two places at the heart of United’s rearguard when Vidic and Ferdinand eventually bow out.

Ferguson, who retired after 27 years as Red Devils manager at the end of last season, had Maguire monitored on a regular basis last season after identifying him as a star of the future.

Now Moyes has his scouts keeping a close eye on the Sheffield-born defender’s form this term.

Maguire, 20, has made rapid strides at Bramall Lane since being handed his Blades debut three years ago.

The 6ft 4ins powerhouse is in his third season as a first-team regular and has already racked-up 121 appearances for the League One side.
