Jamie Vardy came back to haunt Arsenal once again on Tuesday night.

The 33-year-old, who got back on the scoresheet with a brace against Crystal Palace at the weekend, extended his impressive record against the Gunners by scoring the equaliser which saw Leicester City claim a point at the Emirates Stadium.

But should he have still been on the pitch to find the back of the net?

Mikel Arteta on Thomas Partey and transfer plans

Well, according to Gunners head coach Mikel Arteta, the answer is no.

The Spaniard highlighted a challenge from Vardy on defender Shkodran Mustafi during the closing stages of the first-half which left the German needing treatment.

Replays showed Vardy catching Mustafi right in the face with his boot and Arteta insisted the striker should have faced the same outcome Eddie Nketiah faced in the second half.

"The red card decision, you have to know this is a young kid. It can be a red card, but then Leicester have to play with 10 men after 42 minutes," Arteta told Sky Sports.

"For one challenge between 40 and 45 minutes, it has to be a red card as well. I don’t understand the rules.

"Since I’ve been in this country, I’ve never seen a referee go and check any of the images (on the screen). It’s the rules, I can do nothing now."

Arteta's views were backed up by a number of Arsenal fans.

To make matters worse, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp highlighted Mustafi's mistake for Vardy's equaliser.

"He makes this look so easy, as well, on his left foot. Look, I said it before the game about the back three - in the end they will make mistakes," Redknapp said. "You know Jamie Vardy wants to get in at the back-post, you’ve got to be aware.

"As that ball gets crossed in, you’ve got to drop as quickly as you can and make sure you get in a line with him. But Vardy is too cute and too clever for Mustafi. He doesn’t read the situation well enough. That happens time and time again from Arsenal’s defence. He’s too clever for Mustafi."
