The former Watford boss was allegedly offered the role at Leeds United.
According to a report from Gianluca di Marzio, Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani has approached former Watford boss Walter Mazzarri about the prospect of taking over at Elland Road.
The report claims the 55-year-old was approached by his countryman earlier this week to discuss a possible move to Elland Road, with Celta Vigo and Crystal Palace also allegedly making their move.
However, Di Marzio claims Mazzarri has no intention of managing in the Championship at this stage of his career, and one wonders if Leeds opted to activate Garry Monk’s 12-month contract extension after their alternative option had ruled himself out of the running.
That is merely hypothetical, but Radrizzani will be desperate to get Leeds back into the top flight as soon as possible and it is claimed he was quick to act when Mazzarri was released of his duties from Watford.
The experienced manager has worked for the likes of Inter Milan, Napoli and Sampdoria in the past and given Radrizzani’s knowledge of Italian football it is no surprise if he sought out the experienced gaffer as a potential new boss at Elland Road.
With Mazzarri seemingly having no desire to step down a division, instead hoping to test himself in another of Europe’s top leagues, the report claims he will make a decision in the coming days.
If he did reject Leeds, it could be telling for Monk’s long-term future at the club; especially if he fails to secure Premier League promotion this time next year.
