Description
A striking plant, stems erect.
Meadow salsify grows near water or in damp meadows.
The root is 25 cm long, dark grey on the outside and contains latex.
Flowers
Flowers are a reddish-purple, surrounded by 8 bracts, twice the size of the petals. The flowers close at noon.
Leaves
Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass. Broadly linear, wider at the base.
Fruits Seeds
Achene: a large cluster of 1-seeded fruit with long hairs.
Edible
Root: raw or cooked.
Medical
Root: beneficial to liver and gall bladder.
