Under skamstenen står indhugget i soklen "Corfitz WF (Ulfeldt).

English: The traitor and impostor Corfitz Ulfeldt had a shame column set up in Ulfeldt's square - the present Gråbrødre torv - so that his name and deeds should not go into oblivion right away.

It is not a distinctly beautiful stone - and this is necessarily the case - that adorns the top of the sham support. Rough and filled with holes and pits. Uneven tip and black as an ugly, dead and extractable tooth. Under the is engraved is engraved in the stone: "Corfitz WF (Ulfeldt). The traitor. To eternal mockery. Shame and disgrace."

Ulfeldt (1606-64) was married to King Christian 4.'s daughter Leonora Christine. In 1643 he became the chief justice of the state, the most important official of the state, but enriched himself by great deceit. When he fell into disrepute, he joined the legacy of Sweden's heir. In 1664 his farm in Copenhagen was demolished, so Ulfeldts Plads emerged. In the square the same year the shame support was raised. It was damaged by the Copenhagen fire in 1728, but recreated in 1741.

In 1842 it came to the National Museum and today can be seen in the courtyard side by side with a second stone from Denmark's past. The past we don't always like.
