Eight years after rejecting Frederick Wentworth's marriage proposal as he was a poor marine officer, Anne Elliott finds him completely changed. The young man comes back from war with a high military title, a fortune, and the dream to start a family. However, he doesn't desire Anne anymore, thinking that she rejected him because she lacked morals. This romantic plot is the story of Persuasion, the Jane Austen novel published posthumously in 1817. Like in Emma and Pride and Prejudice, the author deals with the tumultuous love story of two completely different characters. The highly successful Persuasion had already been adapted four times, but Netflix has started an exciting new project: adapting Jane Austen's novel in a modern-day version. The streaming platform hired first-time director Carrie Cracknell, and scriptwriters Ron Bass and Alice Victoria Winslow

Two actors already announced

To play Anne Elliott in this contemporary adaptation of the Victorian novel, Netflix has chosen Dakota Johnson. The actress who starred in 50 Shades of Grey will play a modern version of the character. Single, stuck in a closed-minded family, and in financial trouble, Anne Elliott has two choices: leave the past in the past, or listen to her heart and give a second chance to Frederick Wentworth when destiny brings him back to her. The identity of the actor to play Wentworth has not been revealed, but we already know another cast member: Henry Golding will play Mr. Elliott, a classical narcissistic character. The Crazy Rich Asians star and British actor wanted to play a different character. According to rumors, filming should start this month in the MRC studios where several successful films have recently been filmed, including Baby Driver by Edgar Wright. 20 years after the first Bridget Jones' Diary, this modern adaptation of a Jane Austen novel should become a huge hit for the streaming platform.
