Schloss Moritzburg

At a glance

Moritzburg Castle is a baroque gem near Dresden, surrounded by water and a witness to Saxon history and splendour.

Moritzburg Castle in the town of the same name, about 15 km from Dresden, rises majestically on an artificial island. Originally built as a hunting lodge in the 16th century, it was converted into a magnificent Baroque palace by Augustus the Strong in the 18th century. The four distinctive round towers and the gold-decorated architecture bear witness to its historical significance and opulent past.

Inside, the castle houses an impressive collection of deer antlers, works of art and furniture. Nearby is the rococo-style Pheasant Castle, surrounded by picturesque gardens.

Moritzburg is also known to film buffs as the location of the fairytale film "Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella".
