Vendicari Beach – Tonnara and Sveva Tower

The beach of Vendicari is one of the most fascinating coastlines of the reserve, located in the southern zone, between the beach of Calamosche and that of San Lorenzo, beach that defines the boundaries of the reserve. It has a long sandy coastline, with low seabed that slopes gently toward the open sea.

Characteristics are the Neptune seaweeds that could be both on the beach and in the first meters of the water water, forming a barrier of about 5 meters. Beyond this harmless barrier, the sea gets clear waters: green-blue with a sandy bottom that always remains shallow. Immediately opposite, you can find the small island of Vendicari and moving your gaze toward the north you can see the ruins of the tonnara, a fascinating site of industrial archaeology that dominates the entire coast, surrounded by the ancient houses of the anglers.

Walking with northern direction, next to the tonnara, you see the Sveva Tower a fortified structure dating back to 15th century. Here the coast becomes rocky, with small coves of deep-sea ideal for snorkelers.

HOW TO GET TO THE BEACH OF VENDICARI

The beach of Vendicari is reachable from the main entrance of the reserve that is located on the provincial road SP19 which goes from Noto to Pachino (click here for more). Crossed the entrance a short walk on a path bordered by trees and then quagmires, populated by migratory birds will accompany you till a wooden footbridge which leads to the beach of Vendicari.

TYPE OF COASTLINE

The coastline of Vendicari is fine and sandy. Both the shore and the first few meters of shallow water are covered for most of the year by the Neptune seaweed. After the first meters, the sea becomes clear with shallow limpid water. Moving toward the north you can find a rocky area with deep seabed, ideal for snorkelling lovers.
