Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

With a Buick derived V8 that Rover modified to improve robustness and reliability, the P5B was the later iteration and the pick of the bunch.

The last version of the Rover P5, production ran from 1967 to 1973, so this specific car sits right in the middle of the run. Power came out at ~158hp and 210lbft of torque, plenty to play with under your right foot. The saloon versions were ofter seen around the Westminster area, as they were used by government officials, including residents of number 10 way beyond production finished.

This particular car comes to market from ~1 year ownership, having been in the hands of collectors and a bit of a garage queen prior. The current owner is an avid car enthusiast, and put this car through his local classic car specialist with a view to driving. With the running gear having been given an thorough check and refurbishment as needed, it's had a clean MOT at the start of the year and is ready for a new owner to enjoy.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Drew the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

My dad used to call this car the Rolls-Royce-Rover, I jumped at the chance of owning this one in an eye-catching colour.

Drew has memories of the P5B from his younger years, and has owned this car since September last year. He tells us that it was previously in the hands of some car collectors who kept it garaged with little use. Drew is more of a driver though, and so had the car checked over and worked on by his local classic specialist, and then used the car on some trips around the highlands.

Whilst recommissioning the car, Drew decided to add some modern technology, with a new radio with bluetooth and a good sound system, which you can spot in the photos below. He mentions that he really does have too many cars, and so this P5B coupe comes to market now after he's had a chance to experience ownership. Drew will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

The car has benefited from a full body refurbishment with a beautiful blue paint job.

Wheels and Tyres

The Rostyle wheels looked in great condition, on close inspection we couldn't notice any visible signs of corrosion. The full matching set of Federal tyres looked in good condition too, they seemed to have plenty of life left in them.

Please have a look at the photos and video below to asses the condition of the wheels and tyres for yourself.

Bodywork

The P5B has a very sleek outline as it is a coupe shape even with the four doors. The bodywork is in great condition, with no visible signs of corrosion, dings or dents. This is to be expected after the recent refurbishment done.

The underside of the car has surface corrosion to some areas as you'd expect for a car of this era. Take a look at the photos and video below to examine the bodywork for yourself.

Paint

The paint was in great condition and is a stunning colour, it is also two tone with a blue main body and white roof. It features a nice pinstripe, both on the body and roof.

The colour match across all panels is even in colour and finish from our observation. The only points we noticed were some marks in the door shuts as pictured in the interior section. Again, please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the paintwork for yourself.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the car looked very nice with no chips, cracks or discolouration being observed. All of the windows including the small corner ones were functioning as you would expect. The P5B features a lot of chrome trim, it all looked in good condition with no signs of corrosion, Drew told us he'd used a lot of elbow grease to shine up the bumpers in particular, with the rear one being a replacement coming at a cost ~£1,200.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

Interior

This P5B is lavished in cream leather with wooden trim, it was the choice car for transporting the British government in the 70s and 80s.

Seats and Carpets

The seats looked in very good condition with only small signs of wear considering the age of the car, Drew mentions the plush seats make travelling in the car very comfortable. The carpets were dark blue and also presented in good condition with rubber over-mats fitted for protection.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

Dashboard

The dashboard was a mix of old and new, with the the old analogue dials and clock juxtaposed with the new digital radio and speaker system.

Drew did mention that the rev counter does swing around a bit whilst driving and the clock on the passenger side of the dashboard wasn't working. Two relatively small issues he feels.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel looked to be in good condition considering the age of the car, there was only slight wear. The gear stick on the automatic gearbox also looked in good shape, with only slight wear noticed.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to check the condition of the steering wheel and gear stick for yourself.

Mechanics

Fitted with the legendary Rover 3.5L V8 giving smooth power delivery and reliability that made it suitable for the government.

Engine and Gearbox

Having a look at the engine it seemed to be in good order, with no noticeable oil leaks. Drew pointed out the fan seen through the grille is also an optional extra. An automatic gearbox is mated to the 3.5L engine, when out on the road with Drew we noticed how smooth both engine and gearbox were. We didn't observe any unwanted noises either, the engine was quiet but you could hear that familiar V8 burble.

Drew notes that there is a transmission sweat that was deemed not necessary to do anything with - no fluid has been lost during Drew's ownership.

Please take a look at the cold start video below to see for yourself the performance of the engine and gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

On our short journey, the suspension felt soft and dealt with potholes with ease. We didn't notice any knocking coming from the suspension, which you would expect as the suspension has recently had an overhaul as part of the recommission work. The brakes felt good too, on a quiet piece of road Drew demonstrated a light brake check.

The Drive

As mentioned above the P5B drove nicely, it is a nice cruiser and accompanied by the lovely noise of the V8, or your favourite CD with it's modern stereo! To see the P5B in motion please take a look at the on the road video below.

Electrics and Other

Drew told us the only electric components that didn't work were the clock on the passenger side of the dashboard and the rev counter would dance around the dial freely when in motion. Drew assured us that the rest of the electrics were in working order, we witnessed the radio and sound system working.

History and Paperwork

A recent recommission of this P5B coupe has meant it presents in lovely condition in a rarely seen colour on this model, it is ready to be used for touring this summer.

Coming to market from just shy of 1 year ownership, the car has been recommissioned for use on the road by the current owner Drew, after previously just being kept as a bit of a garage queen. Some choice comforts/upgrades in the form of modern stereo and sound system and the car coming with a clean MOT (expiring next January) should give confidence that this is a P5B coupe that can be used and enjoyed.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.
