The Speaker of the Norwegian parliament appointed on a pledge to stamp out political sleaze has resigned six weeks after an expenses scandal.

Eva Kristin Hansen, 48, claimed taxpayer money for a flat in Oslo despite owning a property 18 miles away.

She is one of half a dozen Norwegian MPs accused of bending the rules in a country with traditionally high levels of trust in its politicians.

Hansen, from the ruling Labour Party, was elected president of the parliament — roughly equivalent to the Speaker in the Commons — on October 9, having promised to clean up politics. In constitutional terms the role is senior to that of the prime minister and second only to that of the king.
