Where is it?

On the coast of south-west Norway.

What makes it special?

It's considered the one of the most spectacular fjords in the world.

Why should I go?

To enjoy the incredible views, either from the water; by walking to Skageflå above the fjord; or from scenic roads that hairpin through the mountain's at the inlet's eastern end. Or to visit traditional villages on the fjord's shores.

Did you know?

The fjord is threatened by the erosion of Åkerneset, a mountain whose collapse would unleash a tsunami that would hit the main towns 10 minutes later.

Take me there

Fly to Oslo; hire a car and drive overland or take the E6 to Otta, then to Hellesylt via Lomand Stryn for the scenic ferry (www.fjord1.no; from May 1) up the fjord to Geiranger. Stay at the Villa Utsikten (0047 7026 9660).

What about a package?

Book Hurtigruten's (020 8846 2666; www.hurtigruten.co.uk) 10-day Coastal Discovery & Geiranger cruise (departs June 26 and July 16); from £1,995 per person, including domestic flight and most meals.
