It's hard to imagine the Twilight saga starring anyone but Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. But back before 2008, that almost wasn't the case. In fact, according to Robert, we came pretty darn close to having a different actor in the role of dreamy, brooding vampire, Edward Cullen.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Robert revealed that while filming the first movie in the five-part series, he was nearly fired, and his agents had to fly out to the set in Canada in order to put him in line and smooth things over between the actor and the producers. According to E! News, Robert has previously said in an interview with Yahoo! Movies that his serious commitment to method acting caused conflict during filming.

"I didn’t have to kiss anybody’s [rear end] the entire time," Robert told the Times. "I don’t think I did, anyway."

Still, Robert acknowledged that his time working on the Twilight films, which spanned four years, was "an amazing luxury" and that the experience was "amazing luck, as well, to just have fallen into it with the group of people I worked with on it."

He said, "I think one of the best things, basically, about being a bit of a sellout [is] if you’ve done five movies in a series, you’ve had to accept some responsibility for playing the same character."

And not long ago, Robert even mentioned that, despite the apparent initial on-set drama, he would consider returning to the role at some point in the future. "I mean, I’m always kind of curious. Anything where there’s a mass audience — or seemingly an audience for it — I always like the idea of subverting people’s expectations," he replied. "So there could be some radical way of doing it, which could be quite fun. It’s always difficult when there’s no source material. But, yeah, I’m always curious."
