Students enjoying the view on the Fløyen Plateau

Fløyen

A visit to Mount Fløyen is required for all visitors to Bergen. It's the closest of the seven mountains to the city center. You can be whisked away with Fløibanen, or reach the summit on foot.

Fløyen (400 m) is the most famous of the city mountains in Bergen. It is the plateau (322 m) next to the highest station on the Fløibanen funicular that is the most visited. It is spectacular and one of the top five tourist destinations in Norway. At the plateau, there is a cafe, a store for buying your Fløien souvenir, a snack bar, a restaurant and two playgrounds, one of them with a smal zip-line.

How to get there

The three main paths from the city centre are Fløysvingene, Tippetue and Kamveien.

  • If you start from the Fish Market, walk past the lowest station of Fløibanen, by the old fire station at Skansen and up to Fjellveien. You can choose between the three different paths.
  • Tippetue is the steepest of the three routes, and is popular for sledging in the winter. Depending on the path you choose, the time estimate from the city center is from 30 to 60 minutes.
  • If you need to use public transport to get into the city centre, you can search for the best transit options for you on the Skyss Travel Planner.

The Hike

  • If you start from Bryggen, the trail is about 6.3 km.
  • If you are looking for suggestions for other routes for your adventure to Fløyen, check UT.no's interactive map to search for more options. Hiking opportunities from Fløyen

From Fløyen, there are endless hiking opportunities on either gravel road or paths through the forrest and up to other mountain tops.

Less than 2 km from Fløibanens upper station, you can find Brushytten (a popular kiosk for families in Bergen), and from here there are several routes to explore. You can reach two mountain tops; Rundemanen and Blåmanen from Brushytten. If you’re up for a real challenge, take the Vidden trail to Ulriken.
