The perpetual calendar chronograph was instrumental in establishing Patek Philippe as the predominant watchmaking manufacture in Switzerland. Reference 5020, first introduced in 1994, was produced with a case reminiscent of a 1960s television set, from which this reference gains the nickname as the Patek 'TV-Screen' watch.

When it launched it was not an immediate success, hence its production run ended after only 8 years in 2020. A rather short period considering production runs of several decades for previous Patek Philippe perpetual calendar chronograph references such as the 2499. It is believed that a total of 200 examples were produced in yellow, pink, white gold and platinum. In retrospect, this is an iconic reference ahead of its time and a trophy for any Patek Philippe wristwatch collection.
