Johnny Depp and Mia Wasikowska Sign on for ‘Alice in Wonderland 2’

Movie will come out on Memorial Day weekend in 2016

The stars of the 2010 film Alice in Wonderland, Johnny Depp and Mia Wasikowska, have officially signed on to reprise their roles as the Mad Hatter and Alice Kingsleigh, respectively, in Alice in Wonderland 2. The movie is scheduled to come out on May 27th, 2016.

Director Tim Burton, however, is not returning. Instead, director James Bobbin (The Muppets, Flight of the Conchords) will helm the picture. Disney announced the news today, according to the Hollywood Reporter, as well as a live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book to be directed by Jon Favreau and set for an October 9th, 2015 release date.

Earlier this year, Depp announced that he might retire from acting sooner rather than later. “I wouldn’t say that I’m dropping out any second,” he said in July, “but I would say that’s probably not too far away.”

Similarly, in a June Rolling Stone cover story, he said, “I think while I’ve got the opportunity and the desire and the creative spark to do the things that I can do right now, I should do them. And then, at a certain point, just take it down to the bare minimum and concentrate on, I guess, living life. Really living life.” His only movie in 2013 was The Lone Ranger, in which he played Tonto. Next year, he will star in a sci-fi movie called Transcendence that he was filming in Albuquerque when Rolling Stone caught up with him.
