Hollyhocks are a classic English cottage garden plant. They add architectural height to borders and bloom for months on end. Most are grown as biennials or short-lived perennials due to their susceptibility to rust and fungal diseases. We love them anyway and would not be without them. Grow in fertile, moist-but-well-drained soil in full sun for best results. Will self-sow.
This antique variety was grown by Thomas Jefferson at Monticello and has been popular in gardens ever since. Single flowers in the deepest shade of maroon are held on towering stems that can reach eight feet tall. Despite their height, these plants do not need to be staked but should be planted against a fence or wall.
