SALEM — Artemus, a nearly 3-year-old Rhodesian ridgeback, is no stranger to competition. The decorated pup has competed in dog shows since he was 6 months old, and has earned the title silver grand champion. This month, he will be heading to New York City to square off for the second time in one of the most prestigious and recognizable competitions: the Westminster Dog Show.

Along with nine other dogs of the same breed, Artemus calls Kuluta Rhodesian Ridgebacks in Salem home. His owner and trainer, Marsa Hatfield, described him as "energetic."

"For a hound, he has a lot of enthusiasm and a very upbeat temperament," she said.

As a result, Hatfield said Artemus requires a great deal of "running around," especially before a competition.

Hatfield, who has been breeding dogs in Salem for around 20 years, said winning is in the dog’s blood. His sire competed at Westminster for three years and even won Best in Show.

"It takes a lot of care, time and money to take a dog to competition, especially one at this level," Hatfield said. "So we only take a dog if we feel confident in their performance."

Artemus will be shown by Patricia Clark, a member of the Professional Handlers Association, who resides in Newtown. Clark has long been the handler for Hatfield’s dogs.

There are 43 Rhodesian Ridgebacks set to compete in the show, which will take place Monday and Tuesday.
