IRISH singer-songwriter Áine Tyrrell is touring in support of the rerelease of her single ‘Like Shadows We Fall’ from her 2019 album Return To the Sea.

Ms Tyrrell was raised with a wandering heart on the rugged limestone rocks of The Burren on the west coast of Ireland. Her songs are a call to arms, wrapped in modern wisdom for this modern world.

‘Like Shadows We Fall’ was inspired by Patti Smith’s performance at Byron Bay Bluesfest where not only her words and the band were amazing, but her presence on stage.

“At that moment, I just felt inspired by the power that music has,” Ms Tyrrell told the Gippsland Times.

Ms Tyrrell has had to overcome adversaries over the past two years like so many others. COVID reduced her profession to a slow, slow burn as touring and gigs dried up, and then to add insult to injury, her home was destroyed in the 2022 February Northern Rivers Floods.

“I think what you realise is that mother nature goes where it wants to go,” Ms Tyrrell said.

“It doesn’t care for the boundaries we set up, such as fences, streets, roads, bridges.

“It’s a powerful reminder that all we have is the present, and the people that we love.”

Having lived in Australia for over a decade, she has earned herself the reputation of being an unmissable live act, but touring at the moment has been difficult.

“I understand that people are feeling as insecure as the rest of us right now, whether it’s finances, flooding or COVID. People are not in the habit of seeing live entertainment right now. It’s very hard to get people out into spaces together again,” Ms Tyrrell said.

“But whether I see 200 people, or 20 people in a space, it’s still really special. Everyone is connecting through live music. And that’s beautiful to watch.

“It’s an honour to be part of the reason that people are connecting in a venue. I also like hearing their stories at the merch table.”

Ms Tyrrell said she was looking forward to performing in Gippsland.

“I’m really excited. I’ve never been out that way at all,” she said.

“We’re going to take our time on the road trip there. I travel with my sound engineer, so I don’t have to do all the driving and can take in some sights.”

When visiting a regional area, Ms Tyrell says she loves to explore nature.

“I really like finding the local beaches, the local parks, the botanic gardens. I love going for a pre-show swim. I’m more of a nature person, than a pub person,” she said.

She’s in luck, because Gippsland has plenty to offer.

Áine Tyrrell will perform a one-person show at the Stratford Courthouse this Sunday, October 2.

Doors open at 7pm. Tickets can be purchased from stratfordcourthouse.com.au

The show is not suitable for children under 18.
