Coreopsis lanceolata, the lanceolate coreopsis is a perennial plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. It is native to the southeastern United States, the most widespread species along field roadsides, in fallows or as pioneers in disturbed soils. It is sometimes capable of spreading into an imposing tide of bright yellow daisy. The lanceolate-leaved coreopsis is also one of the most cultivated species: it is a flowering perennial plant that is easy to maintain and propagate.
Description of lanceolate coreopsis
Coreopsis lanceolata produces a plant 50 to 70 cm high and approximately 15-20 cm wide, however horticultural cultivars are often shorter. Lanceolate coreopsis produces a dense clump of multiple, tight rosettes. The leaves are mostly close to the base and produce lush fresh green foliage. The leaves are about fifteen centimeters long, lanceolate, oblong to spatulate, simple or divided into a few deep lobes. This foliage is semi-evergreen.
The flower stems are almost leafless and divide to bear several flower heads (daisy-shaped compound flowers), each borne on long, stiff stems. On the inflorescences, the heart and crown of ligules are most often golden yellow, 5 to 10 cm wide. The 8 ligules are sometimes spotted with dark red and notched at their ends. There are single, double or semi-double varieties.
Coreopsis lanceolata attracts a large number of pollinating insects and almost systematically produces seeds and then spontaneous seedlings. It flowers most in the heart of summer and can appear again in September.
Coreopsis lanceolata looks quite similar to Coreopsis grandiflora which is a little taller and short-lived. Numerous hybridizations between these two species are made in horticulture.
Coreopsis lanceolata ‘Early Sunrise’ is a monochrome, semi-double yellow. It is capable of resowing itself more or less faithfully.
How to grow lanceolate coreopsis?
Coreopsis lanceolata tolerates almost all kinds of soils: sandy, gravelly, loamy or clayey, and even limestone. However, it can be in difficulty in too humid soil which causes powdery mildew and stump rot. Lanceolate coreopsis can grow in partial shade, but flowers best in full sun.
This perennial is very easy to succeed when planted in spring or September/October. Heavy soils will be lightened with loam and sand, and drainage can be improved by a mound or slope. Plants that have just been transplanted need a few waterings to establish them, but once planted, they become drought tolerant.
The lanceolate coreopsis generally manages to reproduce on its own thanks to its spontaneous seedlings, as soon as its seeds find a little free surface. This is all the better as this perennial plant generally only lives 3 or 4 years.
To be sure to maintain a specific cultivar, division is necessary every 2 years so that the plant is rejuvenated and survives beyond 3 years.
Cutting the flower stems at the end of July allows the plant to flower profusely again in September.
How to propagate Coreopsis lanceolata?
Divisions will be made in spring or September. Each piece of transplanted plant will need to be watered 2 or 3 times.
Basal stem cuttings root easily.
The seeds germinate at 20°C.
