Update 24/11/20: Miley Cyrus Candidly Reflects On Sobriety Relapse

In a candid interview, Miley Cyrus has discussed her journey with sobriety, honestly opening up about relapsing.

The 'Nothing Breaks Like A Heart' singer was asked about her sobriety by Apple Music's Zane Lowe, which before she decided to speak about, clarified that recently during the Covid-19 pandemic she had broken her sobriety and drunk alcohol but is currently two weeks sober.

'I like a lot of people, being completely honest, during the pandemic fell off... and I would never sit here and go, "I've been f***ing sober". I realise that I'm now back on sobriety, two weeks sober, and I feel like I've really accepted that time and one of the things I've used is: "Don't get furious, get curious". So don't be mad at yourself, but ask yourself, "What happened?"'

The Disney alum then expanded on her decision to become sober, which she first discussed this summer (more on that below) saying that she didn't decide to make a strong statement saying she was giving up alcohol but it came out in an interview. But Cyrus has since learned that she is 'not a moderation person' so decided to completely eliminate alcohol from her lifestyle.

'I don't think that everyone has to be sober, everyone has to do what's best for them,' she said. 'I don't have a problem with drinking, I have a problem with the decisions I make once I go past that level... I become very impulsive.'

Cyrus added that she's a very disciplined person: 'That's why it's never easy, but it's pretty easy for me to be sober or in and out of sobriety because it's like the day I don't want to f***ing do it anymore, I don't. The day that I do, I do.'

The singer also opened up about the changes in her life that have happened over the past few years, including the break down of her marriage to teenage sweetheart Liam Hemsworth and the devastating wildfire that destroyed their Malibu home (which she referred to as the 'cocktail of chaos'), disputing that there is a 'good time' for some things to happen.

'It's never a good time for your house to burn down, it's never a good time to go through a divorce, it's never a good time for your grandma to die,' Cyrus said. 'It's going to happen when it happens. It's not going to be easy.'

The 28-year-old then explained how she has allowed herself to feel emotions recently, saying she turns off all her devices and sits by herself in her house to experience loneliness.

'It is excruciating. I did it three nights ago and sobbed by myself and I felt so good the next day. We live in a society where we're told to compartmentalise and I just can't do it.'

Original story 24/06/20: Miley Cyrus Opens Up About Being Six Months Sober And Family Addiction

Miley Cyrus has openly discussed her sobriety, revealing that she’s been six months sober and going to therapy.

In a new interview with Variety, the 27-year-old spoke about her decision to avoid recreational drugs like alcohol and even harder substances.

‘I've been sober [,] sober for the past six months. At the beginning, it was just about this vocal surgery,’ she said, referencing her operation last year.

Explaining that her decision to go sober came after thinking about her mother, Tish Cyrus, the singer continued, adding: ‘My mum was adopted, and I inherited some of the feelings she had, the abandonment feelings and wanting to prove that you're wanted and valuable.

‘My dad's parents divorced when he was three, so my dad raised himself. I did a lot of family history, which has a lot of addiction and mental health challenges.’

The ‘Climb’ singer added that being aware of her parents’ experiences has made her question her own.

‘By understanding the past, we understand the present and the future much more clearly. I think therapy is great,’ she noted.

Congratulating journalist Marc Malkin, who interviewed her for the publication, for celebrating his own sobriety ‘birthday’, Cyrus noted: ‘It's really hard because especially being young, there's that stigma of “you're no fun.." It's like, "honey, you can call me a lot of things, but I know that I'm fun"

‘The thing that I love about it is waking up 100 per cent, 100 per cent of the time. I don't want to wake up feeling groggy. I want to wake up feeling ready.’

Over the years, Cyrus has spoken about her use of alcohol and cannabis, and infamously smoked a joint while collecting an award at the MTV EMA 2013 awards in Amsterdam.

Look back over her career, she said: ‘One of my favourite interviews is when I say, “Anyone that smokes weed is a dummy.” That one I love to send to my parents, who are big stoners, every now and then.

‘It's been really important for me over the last year living a sober lifestyle, because I really wanted to polish up my craft.’

Speaking about her vocal surgery last year, which saw her cared for by her boyfriend Cody Simpson at the time, she stated: ‘I had freaking four weeks where I wasn't allowed to talk. I was so ripped writing on the whiteboard, yelling at everybody [Laughs].

‘I had this one big bicep from just yelling at mom and still trying to do meetings. But it prepared me for the stillness and the quietness.’
