Tomorrow (May 19) marks 15 years since the final episode of Angel aired on The WB in the United States, officially bringing the Buffy the Vampire Slayer franchise to an end (on screen, at least).

The last scene of the show featured the titular character (David Boreanaz), Illyria (Amy Acker), Gunn (J August Richards) and Spike (James Marsters) about to face down the forces of Hell that had taken over Los Angeles and then... it cuts to black.

You do that nowadays and you'll probably get some salty fan petition to remake it because fans are so used to happy Hollywood endings they can't accept any deviations from the formula, but we're going off topic here.

Looking back on the ending, Boreanaz told TheWrap that he's always been a fan of how it played out.

"I've always thought it ended great," he said. "I mean, even when it was written and we shot it, I had no problems with it. I think that's great.

"I mean, I think that that's a world that had opened up to a lot of people — the way our show, the way Angel ended was I think right. You kind of go out continuously fighting, you know? And I think that the message of the show was always about the fight and that was a special moment."

Boreanaz continued: "Did they survive that? I don't know. Did they get killed? I don't know. I like to think that they survived it.

"I think that that fight continues and it's a metaphor for everyone to continue to fight."

The actor has also hinted that there will be a reunion to celebrate 20 years of the show, while he recently defended the idea of a reboot for the franchise too.

"Come on, guys. It's a good thing," Boreanaz said at a Comic-Con panel following the reboot news. "Let's just embrace [it]. I'm very happy for them."
