Guy Mitchell, Jr.

Canton - Age 95, of Canton Ohio, passed away on September 28, 2021, following a brief illness with the Covid Virus. After graduating from High School in St. Clairsville, Ohio, Guy, like so many other young men joined the Armed Forces to fight for his country. He was in the Army Air Corp and became a tail gunner in the B-17 Flying Fortress. Following the war, he returned to St Clairsville but soon moved to Canton, Ohio where he spent his adult life. Guy had a long career at the Timken Roller Bearing Company where he retired as an Industrial Engineer.

Throughout his life he was an active sportsman with a particular passion for bowling and golf. As a bowler, he was one of the best in the state. He won numerous awards and was particularly proud of the fact he had bowled at least one 300 game, (23 in total), in six straight decades. In 2007 he was inducted into the Ohio Sportsman Hall of Fame, one of the state's greatest honors. Guy was also an avid golfer and often shot par or better. Perhaps his greatest achievement on the golf course was starting at age 69, he shot his age every year up to and including age 92. He was very proud that he also had 3 hole-in-one's.

One final achievement he received later in life was participating in the Honor Flight Network. He often spoke of how much he enjoyed visiting Washington DC and the Memorials dedicated to all the veterans who served their country.

Survivors include his two children, Richard Mitchell, (Barbara), Judith Simonson and their mother Frances Mitchell, two grandchildren, Sean Simonson, (Catherine), and Rachel Smith (Samuel) and two great grandchildren, Gunner and Emory Simonson. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Ellen Jane Mitchell, Jean Michalek and two brothers Robert Mitchell and James Mitchell.

A celebration of Guy's life will be held at a later date. Those wishing to share a memory or their condolences may sign the online guestbook at www.dwilliamsfh.com
