Leeds United ex-player Luke Ayling 'honoured' by pub name change

Former Leeds United player Luke Ayling has said he is "honoured" a popular supporters' pub has taken his name in recognition of his record at the club.

The Old Peacock in Leeds is calling itself The Luke Ale Inn as a tribute to the ex-defender.

Earlier this month, it was announced Ayling would join Middlesbrough on loan for the rest of the season.

Posting on social media, he said he would be back to "say goodbye" adding: "The drinks are on me."

The pub, opposite Leeds United's Elland Road ground, is frequented by supporters before games.

Owned by Ossett Brewery, it announced the name change on Tuesday and said it was "in honour of Ayling's seven-and-a-half years at the club".

The post said: "Following the departure of Leeds United Defender, Luke Ayling, The Old Peacock will now be renamed 'The Luke Ale Inn' for the remainder of the football season."

Posting a story on Instagram alongside a picture of the newly named pub, Ayling said: "What an honour. Can't wait to get in and have a pint once the season is over."

News of the pub name was met with praise by fans with one supporter posting on X: "Great tribute to a fantastic player for Leeds United."

The 32-year-old has played 268 games for Leeds, skippering the side more than 80 times since joining in 2016.

Announcing his exit Leeds called him "one of the best ever signings in the club's history" and "a tremendous servant".
