Rudbeckia hirta – Goldilocks, also commonly known as the Black-Eyed Susan, is a short-lived perennial usually grown as an annual. It boasts a profusion of large, semi-double, and double flowers that are 3 – 4 inches wide which are a rich shade of golden yellow. Each flower blossom has a black central cone that adds a beautiful contrast as the flower develops. These blossoms rise atop sturdy, leafy stems with oval-shaped green leaves. They have a blooming season ranging from mid-summer to frost, grow best in full sun in medium moisture, average, well draining soils, will grow in upright clumps that will reach up to 24 inches tall, and are drought tolerant once established. I urge anyone buying seed to do their homework on germination, I have not raised and cannot raise many of these plants as I am sub-tropics here in St Augustine, Florida. All seed are NOT alike! There are so many different factors in germination and not doing a search is throwing your money away. I want everyone to be successful when growing your flowers from seed it is the most rewarding experience in Gardening and you can do it, if you give the seed what it needs to grow. I always check 3 sites of info to choose how I will go about it. It is not hard to do, if you do it right!
