Geirangerfjord and village are some of the most breathtaking destinations in Norway. It’s prestigiously known as the most famous fjord of Norway. And that says a lot, coming from this dramatic country with more than 1,100 fjords. As an Acupuncturist-at-Sea, I cruised through the fjord to the village many times in this magical setting. Read on to learn more about the Geirangerfjord and village highlights.
From Norway’s 1,100 fjords, Geirangerfjord is the most famous and popular. Overall, its 15-km (9.3 mi) long lightly colored granite walls loom 1600-1700 m above the water, plunging to depths of 260 m. The labyrinth of this fjord is S-shaped within a Rain Shadow Effect from the Lyngen Alps. Thus, there’s more sunny days here than other areas of the region of rainy Norway. Also, it’s a branch off the Sunnylvsfjorden, which is a branch off the Storfjorden (Great Fjord).
The Seven Sisters and The Suitor Waterfalls
Cruising through Geirangerfjord, I saw its 2 most famous waterfalls. The Seven Sisters cliff top is 410-m (1.350 ft) high with 7 separate streams of water. Springtime is the best time to see waterfalls, as the water surge is most powerful from the snowmelt. According to legend, the “sisters” dance playfully on the mountainside, while “The Suitor,” flirts with them from the opposite side of the fjord. However, because the sisters ignore “The Suitor”, he turns to drink. Thus, this explains why “The Suitor” Waterfall is shaped like a bottle.
What to Do in Geiranger Village
This natural setting of Geiranger Village at the head of the Geirangerfjord is stunning and one of the most beautiful towns in the world. Surrounded by lush green mountainsides, reflecting on the turquoise waters of the harbor created one of the best days of my life. Seriously. It is beyond words and such a blessing to experience. Absolutely enthralled, I did not want an agenda and just wandered. There is a wonderful walking path around the harbor going by the campground amongst paradise surrounded by humbling granite walls and sparkling blue-green waters.
Kayak on the Geiranger Harbor
Many visitors chose to take to the clear teal waters on a kayak. I observed this from the shoreline and thought it looked so serene and peaceful. Here on a kayak you can connect with the smooth waters amid looming walls of beautiful granite canyons. This is a wonderful way to truly connect with the natural wonders of this harbor.
Harbor and Village Walk – Geiranger Fjord and Village
Overall, I saw many wonderful things on my exploration close to the village. I walked by the quaint white wooden, octagonal Geiranger Church on the mountainside with its steeple piercing the blue sky, overlooking the harbor. Nearby, I discovered these charming small buildings with grassy roofs. This is a traditional Scandinavian type of water-tight roof, covered with sod on top of several layers of birch bark on wooden roof boards. Inevitably, the grass grows from the sod giving it the stereotypical style. Later, I saw these types of roofs throughout Norway. In addition, the aquamarine Geirangelva River winds throughout the sanctuary loudly surging snow melt into the harbor.
Storseterfossen Waterfall Walk
One of the most popular walks (I did not do) is the Storsaeterfossen Waterfall walk. The well-marked trail takes about an hour from the village. Evidently, a safe footpath with handrails takes you safely behind the waterfall. Also, this path takes you to the nearby Norwegian Fjord Centre.
Geiranger Skywalk for Epic Views
The steep Trollstigen mountain road takes you to uppermost hairpin switchback. Furthermore, the epic platform at 1500 m above sea level offers stunning views of the village and fjord below. Unfortunately, I didn’t make it here, so will catch this next time.
Overall, Geirangerfjord and Village Highlights
Truly, this is one of my favorite destinations in the world. It’s so humbling to be here, surrounded by nature’s power and beauty. Geiranger Fjord and Village is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Norway. Moreover, the setting allows you to experience the magnificent geology sculptured and carved over eons by our ancient glaciers.
