The Bahá’í Temple in Delhi is one of the most visited buildings in the world, attracting over 50 million people since it opened in 1986. Also known as the Lotus Temple for its distinct half-open lotus design, the belief behind the Bahá’í house of worship is that it should be open for all, regardless of denomination. There are however certain rules: no sermons can be delivered, no ritualistic ceremonies and no musical instruments can be played. There are also no religious images displayed.

The brainchild behind the architecture of this temple is a Canadian architect named Fariborz Sahba. He took 10 long years in planning the design and implementing it.

The temple is shaped in the form of a half opened Lotus Flower and the main structure encircled by nine ponds. There are nine doors that lead to the central hall. In fact, number nine is considered sacred in Bahai faith, which depicts all the major nine faiths of the World. The central hall suggests that all nine religions are dedicated to the sole God, the almighty. This central hall can manage 2500 people at a time.

The Bahai Temple was built during 1980 – 1986 costing Rs ten million. The Temple is really a Half Floating Lotus set amidst pools and garden. The petals are made from white marbles. The petals are made from special concrete clad with white marble, obtained from the Mount Pentitikon mines in Greece. This is the Only Bahai Temple of Worship in Asia. The Lotus Temple today is one of the masterpieces from the twentieth century as well as winner of International Prestigious Awards.

Fariborz Sahba, Canadian architect of Iranian origin, spent 10 years in designing and project management, and with the help of a team of about 800 engineers, technicians, artisans and workers brought to realisation one of the most complicated constructions in the world.
