Ingvar Ambjørnsen

The Elling Series Elling-serien Ingvar Ambjørnsen’s most successful novels is the quartet about the odd-ball Elling: Utsikt til Paradiset, Fugledansen, Brødre i blodet and Elsk meg i morgen. These novels are critically acclaimed and have sold very well to Ambjørnsen’s wide audience. Ambjørnsen introduced something entirely new with his books about Elling. His stories contain crazy inventiveness and absurd, gentle humour. He describes the loneliness – and the dream of friendship. It is an entertaining read, and the protagonist Elling is called by some reviewers “the Norwegian Forest Gump”.

N ov el s

The movie Elling was nominated for an Oscar in 2001, and the stage play was very well received at London’s West End.

Ingvar Ambjørnsen (1956–) made his literary début in 1981, and has since published novels, crime fiction, short story collections, children’s and young adults books, as well as essay collections.

The Jerusalem Syndrome Jerusalemsyndromet Forty-year-old Harriet lives and works in Jerusalem. An award-winning photographer, she documented the scenes of horror soon after a suicide bomber triggered an explosion. Harriet leads a solitary life and sees little of others, except for occasional visits to a Jewish psychiatrist in West Jerusalem who prescribes medicines for her. Afterwards, she sees a priest in East Jerusalem, who allows her to weep.

In an exceptionally fine language that truly moves the reader, Jerusalemsyndromet deals with strongly charged, at times explosive subject matter, but other themes include loneliness and a fragile love story.

N ov el s

Harriet's childhood in Norway is explored in parallel with the present day narrative. She grew up in smallholding, shared with her mother, father and her mother's father. Her mother was given to unpredictable rages, often brutally targeted on Harriet. When her grandfather dies suddenly, Harriet's existence becomes very difficult.

She Was So Pretty Once Ho som var så søt Berit is close to her 60th birthday. Following her early retirement from teaching, she has lived quietly on her disability allowance, mostly staying at home. She passes her time reading books, knitting and cooking suppers for her husband, who still works. But old memories come back to torment her. She recalls what happened during her last year at college. Compared with everything else going on in the world, it was nothing, she supposes. All the same, she has to think it through, again and again. Outside, the winter is bitterly cold. Massive drifts of snow covers the land and the houses.

N ov el s

Rune Belsvik (1956–) is a versatile, highly valued and popular writer of a long line of books for children, youth and adults. He made his literary début in 1979 and has received many awards over the years. He received the Ministry for Culture and Church Affairs' Literary Award in 1994 and the Critics’ Award in 1996 for his Dustefjerten books.

Release the Handle as You Turn Slipp håndtaket når du vrir This is a warm-hearted story about friendship and love across all boundaries. But this is also a social satire in the same tradition as Gulliver's Travels and its Norwegian counterpart, Nils Klim's Journey to the Underworld – a burlesque narrative that shifts between different realities, interconnected by black holes through which we move from Here to There in a terrifying twinkle of an eye! Rights sold to: Germany (Onkel & Onkel).

N ov el s

‘Slipp håndtaket når du vrir is a novel you just have to give in to. A more peculiar educational journey is hard to find; in that case it must be Gulliver's Travels. Here is linguistic slapstick, wagging narrative eagerness and a will to break with specifics from everyday life which in this reader calls for words like Yes! and More!’ NRK

‘We need more authors like Bringsværd, authors who do not just go into themselves, but also out of themselves and let their imagination run free, without taking themselves too seriously; who pulls the reader into black holes whilst standing steady as a rock.’ Dagsavisen

Lars Saabye Christensen

Bernhard Hval’s Slips of the Tongue Bernhard Hvals forsnakkelser A great epic from the author of The Half Brother. Doctor Bernhard Hval left medical school with the best marks in his year. Regrettably, certain bad habits of his, like spitting and swearing and rudeness, led to him ending up in a mortuary doing autopsies. Hanging out with the dead was the best thing for him, people said. The story is told in 1979, when the nearly 80-year-old Bernhard Hval looks back on all of the past century from an extremely eccentric point of view. He gives us an account of himself, his wife Sigrid and Notto Fipp, the competitive walker. A bizarre, unruly novel about friendship, love and craziness – especially craziness.

The Last Thing You Will See is a Loving Face Det siste du skal se er et ansikt av kjærlighet Practically an entire community is described in Det siste du skal se er et ansikt av kjærlighet. Even the floor in a gymnasium is given its own tiny chapter. The narrative focuses on a family: Roy and his son Aksel are the leading characters, together with Kjersti, who is an advocate for the handicapped school pupil Siri. We share their day to day lives as the quiet drama unfolds in a community sheltered by the newly-rich Norwegian state.

N ov el s

Hofstad Evjemo writes about the dreams you hold on to in places where the world seems distant – and about everyone sharing the hope that life will offer something more. But this is also about a community: new spaces in it are opened up and you can get in behind the facades, go where no one usually goes, find new patterns and structures. We are given a roving, strangely realistic view of the author's dissection of a body of Norwegian reality. Everywhere, he provides sharp thumbnail sketches of social and communal life. Eivind Hofstad Evjemo has dared to do something not many in his generation would try: make a community his subject and explore its social hierarchies. He writes in a charged, insightful language.

A Just War

En rettferdig krig It is the week of the 10th December 2009. Barack Obama arrives in Oslo to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. During these intense days in December, we follow three people: For Hans, who has had a stroke and become a patient, the crucial relationship is to his physiotherapist Terje. By chance, she encounters an old flame. Is it too late for them?

Live, Erik's wife, and Karin and Hans's daughter, has gone away for the duration. In her absence, the three stories intertwine and everyone involved is forced to rethink their feeling about Live. What do we mean to each other? What do we know about those who are closest to us?

▶ Fi c ti o n Vigdis Hjorth (1959–) has made an exciting literary career and has written many popular books for both children and adults. Today she is one of Norway’s most interesting, contemporary writers.

Talk to Me Snakk til meg Ingeborg is a middle-aged, unadventurous librarian who lives in a small town in Norway. Her husband is dead, and her son has moved out and lost touch with his mother. On a trip to Cuba, she allows herself to be charmed by a black man, a musician who sings and plays the drums in the hotel garden. He is a poor, but clever man. She is white and well off, but alone. Norway's satiated consumer society is contrasted with the bankrupt Cuba in this politically aware, searching novel about the fragile balance between people – and about a woman's relationships with her son and with her lover.

Roy Jacobsen Anger

Hans Larsen is 72 years old and just released from prison after a long spell inside. He brings with him a letter that has been waiting for him, unopened, all that time. It is from his daughter. Now, as he reads it for the first time, he learns just what he feared. His wife is dead and his daughter has never forgiven him for anything.

Rage and Remorse

The old offender walks out into a personal springtime: a beautiful woman desires him. She is well off and lives in a large house, so Hans moves in with her. His daughter doesn't know that her father is freed and cannot herself break out of her routine – she stays in the same town and tries to build a life as well as she can.

Rights sold to: Denmark (Rosinante&Co), Germany (Osburg) and Sweden (Norstedts).

N ov el s

Anger is an existential drama, in which Jacobsen has borrowed narrative structure from psychological crime fiction. These are biting, beautiful life stories of a handful of people and, in particular, an exceptionally powerful recreation of a father-daughter relationship. A great novel, which occupies a key position in Roy Jacobsen's rich literary output.

‘Elegant, raw and full of humanity … A dark novel that lights up the autumn.’ Haugesunds Avis

‘Jacobsen is a skilful writer who recreates grim human lives and apparently grey existences in a way which makes it hard to stay uninvolved.’ Dagens Næringsliv

‘As a bonus the reader is offered the joy of watching an experienced writer … enter into face-to-face combat with a younger, more energetic version himself, sentence by sentence – and win almost every round. It couldn’t be more gripping.’ GD

Roy Jacobsen (1954–) has since his literary début in 1982 with the short story collection Fangeliv evolved into an original, strong and analytical writer with a special interest in the underlying psychology at play in human relationships and actions. He is a wonderful storyteller with obvious political engagement. He has twice been nominated for the Nordic Council's Literary Award: for Seierherrene in 1991, and Frost in 2003. He was also short-listed for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in 2009 for his novel Hoggerne.

Child Wonder Vidunderbarn It all begins when a mysterious, little half-sister arrives. Her name is Linda. She carries a blue suitcase with a manual. A manual for Linda. Because Linda is someone quite special.

It is the year of the Berlin Wall, of President Kennedy and Jurij Gagarin. Finn lives with his mother in a tiny working class apartment in Oslo. Life is all about a TV, playing with his best friend Freddy, but also about beating up boys in the neighborhood and getting beaten up yourself. This small family’s everyday life is modest and stubbornly social-democratic. But then Linda arrives, and suddenly Finn detects signs of change and secrets about his mother. The foundation of his entire existence is shaking. This powerful depiction of a childhood shows how wonderful and how dangerous it is to be a child. A few seconds later, the rear door on the right opens and a woman in her fifties climbs out. Irritatingly, the door makes a hollow, thumping noise – boom, boom, boom – a signal alerting everyone to the fact that it is open. Anna Maria Harm Anna Maria Harm Peter Serck's latest novel is a wistful tale about the young photographic artist Anna Maria Harm and her inconclusive love affair with the ageing gallery owner who displays her work. He is agonising about his fear for her new, terrible photographs, which he only hesitatingly agrees to exhibit. They are forbidden by Norwegian law; showing dead people, they remind him of a suicide he always has blamed himself for not managing to prevent. It also worries him that Anna's only woman friend is suicidal and plans to film the act of killing herself in order to become famous after death. To stop her, he invites her to exhibit in his gallery.

Anna Maria Harm is an intense, modernist novel that offers insights into the labyrinths of the human mind and into the unsettling and problematic issues raised by contemporary art.

Stig Aasvik

Internal Affairs Indre anliggender Indre anliggender is a realistic study of Stig Aasvik's everyday existence. We are introduced to the people who share his life, his partner and their child, his parents and friends. We are told of his daily work as a Parliamentary language consultant, about a glass of milk, his self-induced humiliations, decline and memories – nothing is too great or too small for inclusion into this self-exposing novel. The approach is meditative; snapshots of life are followed by reflections, fury is followed by grief, sadness by joy.

Indre anliggender is a deep dive to the wreckage of the mind while thoughts are drifting, factual and lyrical, intense and uncompromising. Stig Aasvik's devastating demands on himself have no limits. Karin Fossum

Jeg kan se i mørket Riktor is the protagonist in Karin Fossum's new crime novel. He has worked for many years in a nursing home and seems to be normal, quiet and polite. He is often left on his own to manage patients with many and complex care needs. He torments them at every opportunity – pinches the skin at the back of their necks, pulls their hair. Medication that might have soothed their pain is poured down the loo and syringe contents injected into the mattress. Riktor is simply the «Nurse from Hell».

▶ Cr i m e Fi c ti o n

I Can See in the Dark

He is a loner but when he encounters Arnfinn, a man with a severe alcohol problem, a kind of friendship grows between them. Then one day Riktor comes across Arnfinn extracting money from his wallet. That's the end of Arnfinn: Riktor kills him unhesitatingly. A few days later, DI Randers turns up and charges Riktor with the murder of one of the elderly patients in the nursing home – and locks him up for a crime he didn't commit. The tension and suspense of the narrative are as much related to the insight into Riktor's dark mind, as to the case against him. Will he be found innocent of the old lady's murder? Will he be charged with killing Arnfinn? The Caller Varsleren He rode around on his red Suzuki, wherever there were people to be found, and he studied them with the fascination of a researcher, as though they were exotic animals. He found them remarkable. It was late summer, and people were out in their gardens. He saw young children playing on trampolines, women weeding flowerbeds, men washing their cars outside in the yard. One man squatted down to paint his picket fence, a woman took in freshlywashed laundry from the clothes line. And he liked all of it. He liked this pulsating life, the chalk-white sheets flapping in the wind, the smell of the paint. He liked it, and he wanted to destroy it. Everyone lives on the edge, he thought, and I’m going to tip them all over. A young mother has left her little child sleeping under a tree in the garden. She is quite certain she’ll notice if someone tries to harm the child. Someone emerges from the woods and pulls the crocheted blanket off the child, and the young mother doesn’t notice a thing. Later that same day Konrad Sejer finds a card outside his door on which someone has written: Hell starts now. Varsleren is the tenth novel in the series featuring Inspector Konrad Sejer. Out of the Ground Wast Thou Taken Av jord er du kommet There is a mass grave in Oslo's Riis cemetery. Patients from Gaustad Psychiatric Hospital were buried there until the mid-1970s. This is the truth.

▶ Cr i m e Fi c ti o n

Chris Tvedt

After quite a lot of agitation in the media, the government decided to have the grave opened in order to establish the facts about those who were buried there. More than forty skeletons were unearthed. One of them shouldn't have been there… This is not true. But it might have been. Edvard Matre, murder investigator with Serious Crime Command, has returned to the city of Bergen, his home territory. A young woman has been killed, another is in a comatose state, and the two cases have so many features in common that the police begin to fear a serial killer may be at large. Edvard has to find the murderer before he kills again. But it's far from easy. The police have nothing solid to go by, no suspects, motives or clues. It is less than helpful that Edvard is told of results from DNA tests that it seems that one of the bodies buried in the Riis mass grave is likely to be his mother. As far as Edvard knows, his mother died in a road traffic accident some ten years ago and is buried in a Bergen churchyard. Edvard Matre is used to not knowing who the murderer is. Suddenly he cannot tell who he is himself. Av jord er du kommet is the book of the month in three major book clubs in Norway.

The Forest Opens Long Before I Wake Up Skogen åpner lenge før jeg våkner The funicular track up the Fløyen mountainside starts in the city of Bergen; here, it forms the backbone in a collection of short prose passages. Geographically, the protagonist stays within a quite narrowly defined area, but his thoughts move all the more freely in time and space. His interest in the history of life on Earth clashes with his fear that he will himself prove unable to add to the history.

Kristian S. Hæggernes (1972–) saw his first collection of poetry Tyngde av fallende skygge published in 2004. The collection Med vinterstemme came out in 2008.

Bella Blu Bella Blu Bella Blu is something as rare as a collection of sci-fi poetry – a voice from the future. In his latest work Terje Dragseth explores a lyrical language that can encompass knowledge about the world from the natural sciences. Among those who are given the opportunity to speak in Bella Blu are Voice Over 1, Voice Over 2, the Night Messenger & the Geometrical Girl. This is a collection of poetry that breaks through ordinary boundaries.

After Terje Dragseth’s (1955–) debut with The Sacrificial Feast (1980), he has published a series of books which have confirmed his position as one of Norway's most innovative and incisive poets.

From Hatred To Love The events that changed Norway 22.07.11 On Friday July 22nd, attacks were made on the government executive quarter in Oslo and the island Utøya in the Tyri Fjord. 77 people were killed and many more injured. They were mourned by families and friends who had lost those they held very dear – and by an entire grief-stricken nation. For this book new, unique images, all taken between 22 and 25 July, have been collected from the press, photographic agencies and from private individuals. Together with the texts of the public speeches, news reports and many of the messages exchanged on social media, they tell a historical narrative that from now on will be imprinted on the nation of Norway. A huge and important collective effort laid the foundations for this memorial volume and the profits on the sale will, in their entirety, be donated to the 22 July Trust.

Right Wing Extremism Det mørke nettet In the wake of July 22nd, Øyvind Strømmen is one of the very few able to give us badly needed knowledge about the background of the terrible tragedy that unfolded in Oslo and on Utøya. In the book Det mørke nettet Strømmen argues that the attitudes and the hatred made obvious to all on July 22nd are in no way unique. It can be traced back in time, both to the Norwegian past and to right-wing extremist parties and movements all across Europe.

Using a selection of concrete examples, Strømmen creates a complex but clearly drawn image of anti-islamic Europe – from the author Oriana Fallaci to extremist parties on the right such as Vlaams Belang and Front National, and on to the bloggers interacting in the context of the Vienna school, with the Norwegian Fjordman as one of the most distinctive voices. The author also provides an overview of the history of terrorist actions by right-wing extremists during the last few decades.

N o n - Ficti o n

Strømmen gives an account of the ideological positions which served as points of departure for what became terrorist action. He stresses in particular the so-called counter-Jihadism, internet radicalization and movements parallel to Islamism. One of the crucial issues for activists within this sphere is the fear that groups within Europe's immigrant communities are in fact agents ready to carry out a much grander, more invasive plan: a future Eurabia, where non-western settlers are in the majority in Europe, and gradually attempt to replace western civilization and culture with conformity to Muslim doctrine and lack of freedom.

‘This has got to be the most important book of the year.’ Dagsavisen

‘Øyvind Strømmen was awarded "Freelancer of the year" this fall for his journalism on right wing extremists and islamofobic blogs on the internet. It is well-deserved. And with this book he has made a strong contribution to the discussions the Norwegian socitety will go through post July 22nd.’ NRK

The Heart Against The Stone The story of a survivor from Utøya

Hjertet mot steinen On July 22nd 2011, Adrian Pracon (21), a Norwegian-Pole and member of Labour Youth, found himself face-to-face with Anders Behring Breivik on Utøya. Pracon begs for his life, but knows deep in his heart that he will die. For a couple of slow seconds he waits for the shot that is to end his life. But the mass murderer lowers his weapon, turns and walks away.

N o n - Ficti o n

We will probably never learn why Adrian was allowed to live, while so many others were mercilessly denied. But we realise how fateful this moment was: the encounter between someone who had just decided to take active part in society, and another who had devoted ten years of his life to plan a brutal attack on it. This is Adrian's unambiguous message from his hospital bed: no act of terror, however brutal, is going to weaken his commitment. By telling his story, Pracon wants to make this commitment of his widely known and to honour his friends, who died because they passionately shared it.

Adrian Pracon (1989–) is the regional secretary in AUF (Labour Youth) Telemark. He encountered Breivik three times on Utøya, but survived.

Even When The Sun Won’t Shine The terrorist attack on Norway 22/7

Selv om sola ikke skinner The young people on Utøya emerge from their tents before half past seven to join the morning exercises. The rain has made some of them sleep badly, while others have been arguing about politics and love all through the best part of the night. Many look forward to meeting Gro Harlem Brundtland, who is due to arrive in just a few hours. At the same time, daily life in Oslo starts. The Dagsavisen journalist Mona Larsen switches on her computer and picks up a cup of coffee in time for the last morning meeting of her working week. As usual, Mohammed steals a moment for a cigarette outside his shop, before bending to get hold of the shutters and pull them up.

Selv om sola ikke skinner is a literary reportage of the darkest day in our lifetime. The book follows two parallel storylines, staying on the heels of the perpetrator and also following the young people on Utøya. Through watching the man who will kill and the victims who will be killed, the author pursues the narrative of events from early morning in Oslo to dark evening in the Tyri fjord.

N o n - Ficti o n

Over in Oslo west, Anders Behring Breivik wakes up in his mother's home. He eats breakfast and then prepares for the tasks of his day.

The journalist, book reviewer and author Stian Bromark is the man behind this literary reportage in book format. Bromark was himself a Labour Youth member once.

Stian Bromark (1972–) is the author of several books. He is the Chief Book Reviewer for Dagbladet and also writes for the news magazine Ny Tid.

Extreme Europe Ekstreme Europa What do Norway’s Progress Party, the Swedish Democrats, the True Finns and the Danish People’s Party have in common? They were all recipients of the terrorist manifesto of July 22nd. The perpetrator had connections in right-wing extremist organisations, but also in the more normal environment of European party politics. This is the main theme in Ekstreme Europa where Anders Ravik Jupskås presents a coherent account of contemporary rightwing radicalism and extremism in Europe.

Fridtjof Nansen The Man and His Times

Fridtjof Nansen In this biography of Fridtjof Nansen, the man is portrayed not as a superman, but as a believable human being. He was selfish and restless, a poor father and husband, exceptionally egocentric and a typical know-all.

N o n - Ficti o n

However, Nansen was also gripped by a powerful urge to be an active citizen. His role in Norwegian political life grew critical during the succession from the union with Sweden in 1905. He also displayed considerable international and humanitarian engagement over plans to deal with refugees, prisoners of war and victims of starvation. And – of course – he was a courageous leader of expeditions into the Arctic region. The First World War was the turning point in Nansen's life. His background in Polar travel formed the basis for his humanist engagement. In other words, the book turns on its head the dramatic script that underlies the arguments of all previous Nansen biographies. Rights sold to: Estonia (Tänapäev).

Roald Amundsen Roald Amundsen ”Exploits in the polar regions must be judged in the light of the subject's former life,” wrote Roald Amundsen in his memoirs. Roald Amundsen (1872–1928) became one of Norway's greatest national heroes. He sought out the earth's best-kept secrets, but as he opened up undiscovered areas of the globe, he shielded his own life from outside scrutiny. Innumerable maps can show us where the polar explorer went. But what of the other outstanding and unanswered question about him: who was Roald Amundsen? No one knows the character of an island or a continent before he goes ashore. In this wide ranging and imaginative biography, Tor Bomann-Larsen retrieves, out of the mists of oblivion and the obscurity of myth, the legendary but hitherto undiscovered land of Roald Amundsen. Tor Bomann-Larsen's biography of the celebrated Roald Amundsen throws new light on the man, in part by building on several previously unused and largely unknown sources.

Ragnhild's Story «Hun ville jo ikke dø» Last summer, Ragnhild Embla Helsengreen died of an overdose. She was only 15 years old. This made her one of the youngest ever victims of an overdose. The whole country gasped, whispering the question: How could this have happened? Ragnhild was not only running away from a care home for young people – she was also running away from her family background and from her whole life. Through talking with her friends and family, with police and care staff, Siren Henschien is able to tell us the story of Ragnhild. Her book about Ragnhild deals above all with how we, the adults, failed when a terrified 15-year-old needed us the most.

A Road Back from Schizophrenia I morgen var jeg alltid en løve Arnhild Lauveng spent ten years in secure wards suffering from schizophrenia. Rome is not only rich in ancient history, but also a modern metropolis with a present and recent past which is by turns bloody, chaotic and seductive. The author Simen Ekern brings his readers along on a tour at breakneck speed through the streets of Rome, from the post-war years to the present day. We wander along the backstreet where the body of the murdered politician Aldo Moro was found in the boot of a Renault 4. We have a cup of coffee with a man who bitterly regrets that he joined the Red Brigade and meet the woman with Mussolini earrings. The book is interested in particular in the militant movements on the extreme left and also in the fascism that never quite disappeared. The Horse

A Magic Companion from Norwegian Ancient History

Hesten The author has written a book about the horse, the beautiful and wise animal who has been a human companion since times immemorial. Another strand in her account is the archaeologist who interprets ancient communities and introduces us into another world of ideas and beliefs, alien myths and practices.

N o n - Ficti o n

Throughout known time, horses have played important roles in everyday life. They have been hunted and eaten, and used for transport in both war and peace time. Man and horse have existed side by side in a working relationship, but in addition the horse has been important as a symbol. Horse images have been found carved on rocks and incorporated into jewellery, belts and other craft objects. The horse is also part of old literary sources, and has had important ritual functions as a symbol of both fertility and death. Magical qualities were ascribed to this animal, which was thought able to cross the boundary between life and death. The book is richly illustrated and communicates the magic and beauty of the horse.

In tents and cabins, round the camp fires or simply back at home, a quiz is a great way to pass the time, fun as well as useful. In this book, the authors have collected questions and answers which add up to important knowledge for all who enjoy wild nature. Mostly, these facts are good to know for the majority of us, but the emphasis is on basic awareness of information that would be invaluable when out hiking. Questions follow about subjects like setting up a camp, clothing, equipment, food, transport etc. Skills such as direction finding, driving with dogs, hunting and fishing are given plenty of space, as have technical issues like survival, First Aid, safety and weather. Now and then general knowledge tests turn up, with questions about geography and biology, notably showing a great deal of interest in identifying species of animals, birds and fish. Opposisjonen

Vingen bindes inn akkurat i bøyen.

Here, you will find answers to all these questions and many more. Dr Fedon Lindberg has investigated new research on low carbohydrate intake and present updated scientific evidence with regard to both positive and negative effects of reducing the carbohydrate content in meals; he also discusses the significance of replacing carbohydrates with food which over time will help to prevent illness. He comments sensibly on the pros and cons of popular lowcarb diets and focuses on possible long-term effects on health, not only short-term ones such as changes of body weight. For instance, should one risk slimming, and poorer health after 10–20 years? The book ends with a collection of recipes aimed at helping beginners to start a new food regime – one which will contribute to improved health and a longer life.

Smoke-Free At Last! Røykfri NÅ! Quit Smoking NOW – it is easier than you think! Follow the VitaCode, the cure that works when all else has failed. Did you realise that our subconscious (what you're unaware of) makes up around 90 per cent of our mind, and the conscious part just 10 per cent? Or that your subconscious determines what you want several seconds ahead of you becoming aware of it? Or that subconscious associations are made in ways unknown to you? For these reasons, relying on willpower or common sense is often not enough. Nor is telling yourself that you must stop now – you will continue, all the same.

N o n - Ficti o n

With Ronny Hansen's unique method, based on influencing your subconscious mind in various ways, you need only a few weeks to get over the urge to smoke cigarettes forever. And, unlike many people, you won't put on weight once you've stopped smoking. The method works just as well if you want to stop taking snuff. The method will be explained to you step by step. A helpful CD comes with the book. The process will take you right along to Liberation Day – the day you smoke for the last time. Afterwards, you will not even feel tempted. Incredible, but true!

Ronny Hansen is a hypnotherapist and Norway's leading

expert on how to stop smoking. He is the founder and executive of Medicor, Norway's largest chain of hypnotherapy practices. Røykfri NÅ! is his first book.

Hidden Away How ME Became the Most Controversial Illness Today

De bortgjemte The most severely ill patients lie in sound- and lightproof rooms, masks covering their eyes, flat on their back in beds they never leave and hardly able to bear drawing a deep breath while resting. Many are fed through a nasal tube. And many are youths or young adults, whose next of kin spend years caring for them because no other options are available.

‘De bortgjemte has become a compelling book which is often harrowing reading. The language is to the point, the analyses are crystal clear and the documentary presentation shifts effectively between individual cases and medical issues … It is no longer possible to use ”mental” after Jørgen Jelstad’s comprehensive disclosure of medical ignorance and arrogance. Although there are doctors who meet ME patients with respect, a recent [Norwegian] survey reveals the medical profession’s ignorance.’

N o n - Ficti o n

Jørgen Jelstad introduces us into many of these homes, where most of those involved feel they are disbelieved because this illness is classed as a psychiatric condition. The author’s mother is an ME sufferer and he writes from personal experience. But he also writes as someone informed about Norwegian and international research and is able to help us understand this mysterious condition and why health professionals find it so controversial.

Loveleen Rihel Brenna

My Distinctiveness, My Strength Min annerledeshet, min styrke The author describes in her frank and unflinching book how she has gone about the stages on the road to independence. She examines the concept of identity and shows how she has fused two different cultures into one – her own. Now, being different has become her identity, her source of strength and, for her, the normal state of life. She writes of growing up in a minority group, the arranged marriage and divorce, and of gradually maturing. She also describes what it has cost her and what is to be gained by challenging other people's – and one's own – limitations and definitions of culture and identity. Roots and a sense of identity are not always determined by skin colour and religious faith, but also by gender, education and social setting. Successful integration demands commitment and openness from every one of us. The challenge is to allow every other person the right to define him – or herself: only you hold the key to your own life.

Loveleen Rihel Brenna (1967–) was born in India. In 1972, she arrived in Norway as a 5-year-old. She trained in pedagogics, leadership and multicultural work and has run her own consultancy. Recently, she stepped down from her post as head of the Parents' Panel for Foundation Education. She has published several books in her specialties.

From One Burnt-Out Case To Another The road back to life from a burnout

Fra en utbrent til en annen In 2007, the author was diagnosed as a burnt-out case and later became depressed. During this period, she felt isolated, alone and all that goes with being outside the setting of one's workplace. She kept asking herself: Why Me? Answer: she was a typical representative of the kind of people who become burnt-out: energetic, engaged, hardworking.

▶ Se lf - D e v e lo pm e nt

Benedikte Rasmussen

But she also wanted to find out about burnout: what it really is and how she could get better.

N o n - Ficti o n

She has written the book she wished for when she was a burnt-out case herself. It contains both her personal experience of the road into and away from burnout, and advice, knowledge and inspiration. She writes with a sense of humour and concern for others in the same situation as she once was. She also wishes very much to help those who are at risk.

Benedikte Rasmussen (1972–) used to work as a weather forecaster for TV2. She holds the world championship title for weather reporting. She has also worked in the advertising industry and trained in sales and marketing. 107

Emotion and Common Sense Thought Field techniques in practice

Følelser og fornuft Thought Field techniques make up a modern therapeutic approach, which combines Eastern knowledge of the body’s energy pathways with more traditional teachings in psychology. While the therapist taps critical points on the body surface, the patient focuses on her or his problem and describes it. A process begins which alters the patient’s thought patterns, and causes pain and other problems to disappear.

N o n - Ficti o n

Thought Field Therapy aims at changing the intensity of unpleasant sensations in such a way as to correct their relationship with thoughts and experiences. If strong emotions can be made to fade, the outcome could be peace of mind and absence of physical discomfort.

The Parental Role You Are the Grown-up!

Foreldrerollen Many parents take an indulgent approach to bringing up their children, who are offered every opportunity to choose and make up their own minds. We hope for happy, contented offspring but instead end up with little princes and princesses, who haven’t learnt regard for others. Such children tend to be self-assured and strongwilled, but also demanding and ungrateful. Their expectations of attention and assistance can create trouble at school. The author analyses different styles of upbringing and the practice of personal authority, as well as how children develop, gain maturity and learn. She explains why contemporary upbringing tends to be child-indulgent and what the consequences are. Bringing up children requires strength of purpose and will, so that parents can hold firm when the children don’t like what we have decided.

Recover power for parents – you will become a secure grown-up whom children trust!

Anne Nielsen (1958–) trained as a primary school teacher and talk therapist, and has long experience of working in nursery schools and after-school clubs. She lectures, writes, manages her company Foreldrepraxis and also works on course development in Læringsverkstedet, a company specialising in teaching the very young.

Don’t Want To! Me Do It! Vil ikke! Gjøre selv! What to do when your child insists on wearing a summer dress and sandals in mid-winter, or when a trip to the shops turns into a howling tantrum or the child has to start from the beginning whenever it hasn't been allowed to do everything himself? The terrible toddler period is a demanding time that can cause many large and small confrontations. This book provides good advice about how to take control, while at the same time respect the child's feelings and support its self-esteem. Real Food

Ekte mat For Andreas Viestad, «real food» means two things: pleasure and also the satisfaction that comes from eating well, preferably every single day. If food is to count as real, it should have a history, an origin. What is it we need in order to cook real food? We need knowledge and action. If we know something about our food, we will find cooking it easier. And it adds to the enjoyment at the table if we have ourselves added an extra ingredient to the meal we are serving, be it something grown in the garden or balcony tub or window box, or things gathered on nature walks. Ekte mat is a unique cookbook. Although the themes are large, the recipes are easy and the book is fine for ordinary use if you have leafed through it, found something that looks nice and want to cook it for a meal for yourself, or for family and friends.

The trick is to select plant species that are adapted to the local climate and capable of coping with winds, cold, sun, snow, salt or chalk. The materials should suit the environment, be it stone or slate, wood and gravel, and ceramic pots, barrels or crocks.

N o n - Ficti o n

Comfort is catered for by arranging seating near a barbecue. Grow fruits and berries, scatter ice candleholders, set up bird tables... The author is a knowledgeable and inspirational guide to how each one of us can create a private oasis, while at the same time respect the surroundings. An important point is the garden should be easy to look after and manage on its own most of the time. Your dream garden is within reach!

Kristin Langebraaten

My Christmas House Til mitt julehus Once again, we meet Kristin Langebraaten and are charmed. Her strength is her wealth of ideas, described here in careful step-by-step pictures and drawings. She has a new take on every kind of Christmassy decoration. The book describes how to make advent calendars in various materials, cards and gift labels, and many variants of decorations such as angels, gnomes and hearts. The text suggests ways of using the different motifs, whether you want to paint them or model them in clay, or recreate them in embroidery or patchwork. All the patterns are fully set out on single, detachable pattern sheets.

Christmas Joy Julefryd

Sew a lovely pillow or tablecloth especially for Christmas. A new Advent calendar can, over the years, become an heirloom, and handmade gifts are a joy to both the person giving them and the recipient. The book’s good mixture of new and old techniques stands for both tradition and rejuvenation.

Christmas Baskets Julekurver Making paper Christmas baskets is a lovely tradition – and something nice to do with the kids in the run up to Christmas. Some people have never learnt how to make Christ mas baskets, and others have forgotten how – this book shows you step-by-step how to weave these pretty little baskets, from basic patterns to more advanced techniques. Every basket in the book is marked to show the degree of difficulty in cutting and weaving. And why not give someone a personalised basket with their star sign, name or date of birth on it, as a special birthday gift? Full-size patterns are included on a separate pattern page at the back of the book.
