Ingvar Ambjørnsen

The Elling Series Elling-serien Ingvar Ambjørnsen’s most successful novels is the quartet about the odd ball Elling: Utsikt til Paradiset, Fugledansen, Brødre i blodet and Elsk meg i morgen. These novels are critically acclaimed and have sold very well to Ambjørnsen’s wide audience. Ambjørnsen introduced something entirely new with his books about Elling. His stories contain crazy inventiveness and absurd, gentle humour. He describes the loneliness – and the dream of friendship. It is an entertaining read, and the protagonist Elling is called by some reviewers “the Norwegian Forest Gump”. The movie Elling was nominated for an Oscar in 2001, and the stage play was very well received at London’s West End.

Ingvar Ambjørnsen (1956–) made his literary début in 1981, and has since published novels,

crime fiction, short story collections, children’s and young adults books, as well as essay collections.

‘I strongly recommend Ingeborg Arvola’s new novel. It’s an unusual book, very alive and deeply serious.’

N ov el s

This novel with several protagonists covers a wide range of topics, from the problems of living together, to the beauty industry, to gambling addiction. The small family consisting of Kine, Konrad and six-year-old Iver, an anxiety-ridden child, has had to move in with Kine's parents because Konrad has gambled away everything the family owned and more. An uneasy place to start from, but they're determined to try to rescue their relationship. In a close neighbourhood, we meet many people from Kine's past. Ingeborg Arvola writes entertainingly, but also with great commitment to her serious themes, which include food refusal, hysteria about beauty ideals, the anguish of children, our relationships with animals and nature in general and criminal trade in organs.

Follow Me All the Days of My Life Følge meg alle mine dager

N ov el s

In her diary, an elderly woman tells of how she is gradually losing control over her existence. She lives alone, without contacts with family or friends. Both obstinate and wilful, she refuses to let the cleaning lady in and so it happens that she scrubs the floor with rice pudding instead of scouring powder. Suddenly, a great tit is perched in the bath and singing away – or is it actually the stuffed rock ptarmigan she inherited from her father? She has clear moments, when she broods about her failing memory and understands how far she is falling short of managing her life. Then, she also remembers fragments from her past: she had been an outsider in her own family and grossly betrayed by Axel, the great love of her life. And there were the periods in mental asylum. Despite everything, this isn't a sad story; the writer has given her storyteller an inventive, convincingly old-fashioned language that flows easily and makes this book into a rich reading experience of high literary quality.

‘The author’s eye is everywhere. The narrator is unreliable, but what she recalls is more than enough to shock the reader. It’s exciting to speculate about where Sunniva Lye Axelsen will go in her next book.’

Release the Handle as You Turn Slipp håndtaket når du vrir A warm-hearted story about friendship and love across all boundaries. But this is also a social satire in the same tradition as Gulliver's Travels and its Norwegian counterpart, Nils Klim's Journey to the Underworld – a burlesque narrative that shifts between different realities, interconnected by black holes through which we move from Here to There in a terrifying twinkle of an eye! I stared at the burning currant bush. Tried to catch a glimpse of who had hidden behind it. And I couldn't stop myself from addressing her.

N ov el s

“Lady,” I said cautiously. “Excuse me for asking … but I was under the impression that the Nameless One usually materialised in briar bush and not a currant one?” “Too true,” the voice replied. “But can you spot any nearby briars?” “No,” I admitted. “There you are, one has to make the best of what's at hand,” the voice said. “And in my view, the currant bush is a perfectly good option. Burns just as well, too!” “Blessed Lady,” Jensen said unhappily, closing his eyes and burying his snout in the grass. “Never mind Jeremiah. He isn't himself these days.” “Is that so?” The voice sounded concerned. “Who is he now?” I'm standing at the window, looking out over the city. It is larger than ever. Like a huge octopus. Now the lights are going out. The long tentacles turn grey, one after the other. We're slowly enveloped by darkness. All the same, I remain were I am. Anita comes along, approaches me carefully and puts her muzzle on my right shoulder. I look into her large, dark eyes. “But we'll never make it together,” I whisper to her. “Because I'm waiting for someone else.” Anita twists her head round and licks my face. “You mean the female who walks on two legs and can wiggle her toes?” she asks sadly. “That's right,” I reply. “She is the one for me.” Anita speaks on, but because my ears are located on my ankles it's hard to pick up all she says.

Bernhard Hval’s Slips of the Tongue Bernhard Hvals forsnakkelser A, great epic novel from the author of The Half Brother. Doctor Bernhard Hval left medical school with the best marks in his year. Regrettably, certain bad habits of his, like spitting and swearing and rudeness, led to him ending up in a mortuary doing autopsies. Hanging out with the dead was the best thing for him, people said.

N ov el s

The story is told in 1979, when the nearly 80-yearold Bernhard Hval looks back on all of the past century from an extremely eccentric point of view. He gives us an account of himself, his wife Sigrid and Notto Fipp, the competitive walker. A bizarre, unruly novel about friendship, love and craziness – especially craziness. Rights sold to DENMARK (C&K), GERMANY (BTB), BULGARIA (VESSELA lutzkanova) and ISRAEL (Kinneret-Zmora).

Sex, Death and Marriage Sex, død og ekteskap The narrator of this novel does his very best to kill himself. Why would a 32 year-old Norwegian writer take his own life? We watch as the main character repeatedly tries to kill himself, through his remorse, cowardice, debauchery, marriage, and sodomy until the final scene where he deals the fatal blow at the pub Valka in Oslo. Flink’s narrative is crude, humorous and melodramatic, while being poignant, precise, nuanced and disturbing. Rights sold to Germany (Ubooks) and Czech Republic (Vakát).

A Fool Free En dåre fri

Received The Critics’ Award in Norway and Swedish Radio’s Listeners’ Award. Nominated by both Norway and Sweden for the Nordic Council’s Literature Prize! Eli lives alone. But she shares her life with Espen, Erik and Emil – or, rather, their voices, which have been with her since childhood. Periodically, she is cared for in a mental hospital and treated either with sympathy, or with gross insensitivity. Eli’s will to live and be creative is strong, but the voices keep rowing and ruining things for her. Still, she carries on writing books and making films.

Erik Fosnes Hansen Erik Fosnes Hansen was born in New York on June 6, 1965, to Norwegian parents. He was raised and went to school in Oslo. After graduation he worked as a radio journalist for a few years before moving to Stuttgart to study literature and art. In 1985, at the age of twenty, he published his first novel, Falketårnet (The Falcon Tower), an intense psychological and symbolic drama set in the German Empire of the Crusades around 1230 AD. The novel was praised by critics and audience alike as a debut far beyond the ordinary.

N ov el s

His second novel, Salme ved reisens slutt (Hymn at Journey’s End), which was published in Norway in 1990, is about the musicians in the multinational orchestra onboard the ”Titanic” in 1912; an elegic journey through Europe at the fall of an epoch. Salme ved reisens slutt was received as a sensation by the press and is one of the bestselling Norwegian postwar novels, also outside Scandinavia. It has reached bestseller level and earned superlatives from critics in the nearly thirty countries where is has been published so far. In 1990 Fosnes Hansen was awarded the most prestigeous Norwegian literary award Riksmålprisen for Salme ved reisens slutt, and in 1998 the book was nominated for the international IMPAC Award. Fosnes Hansen’s third great work Beretninger om beskyttelse (Tales of Protection) was published 1999 and was hailed as a masterpiece and a literary sensation. It is a bestseller in Norway and other countries and was shortlisted for the Aristeion Prize 2000. Løvekvinnen (The Lion Woman) was published in October 2006. Again Fosnes Hansen made a success, and the novel earned him the Book Seller’s Award. Fosnes Hansen’s novels have been sold to more than 25 territories worldwide.

Helmer's Journey, 1979 Helmers reise, 1979 “Doing casual work had made him learn how to be a fixer. As he moved about, he liked striking bargains, spruce himself up and catch any chances that came his way. He bartered goods against jobs, and job against goods, or, indeed, goods against goods and jobs against jobs. Wheeling and dealing created movement, life. It was his way of playing.”

N ov el s

Helmer, the vagabond, is a man with a keen eye for both women and cosmos. One warm evening in June 1979, he said goodbye to his girlfriend, Judith. His plan was to work in a hippie-style collective, where he has been before. He drives off across the mountain at night. At first, the journey looks like a promising road movie. But life turns out different: he is taken on a dark odyssey and soon Helmer's soul is at stake.

Thirty Days In Sandefjord Tredve dager i Sandefjord

N ov el s

Vigdis Hjorth constantly renews herself, now with a new novel. Recently, Hjorth has received glowing reviews for her recent novel Snakk til meg, and the highly prestigious Gyldendal Prize 2011 for her authorship in its entirety, as well as enjoying the terrific success of the film based on her classic story for young people Jørgen + Anne = sant. In 30 dager i Sandefjord, she investigates the psychic states generated by being held captive: the woman at the centre of her novel has a one-month prison sentence. The writing illuminates the exceptional, strange and almost absurd condition of “being inside” and analyses the effects it has on this resourceful woman. She compares it to returning to childhood, to being ten years old once more and the new girl in the class: how you respond by keeping a very low profile, accepting humiliation, withdrawing. As part of what the author shows to be the practical results of punishment, her protagonist feels put under guardianship, infantilised. The tone of the storytelling is both direct and literary, and the narrative offers unforgettable portraits of other prisoners. This is a challenging, thought-provoking account of how a Norwegian prison for women is perceived by those inside it.

Repentance Anger Roy Jacobsen's novel Virgo was published in 1988. It was very well received and praised for its deep psychological insights.

▶ Fic t i o n

Roy Jacobsen

But the prize-winning author had not quite finished what he wanted to do and now, 23 years later, he has written a completely new novel but on the same theme – he calls it Anger. Hans Larsen is 72 years old and just released from prison after a long spell inside. He brings with him a letter that has been waiting for him, unopened, all that time. It is from his daughter. Now, as he reads it for the first time, he learns just what he feared. His wife is dead and his daughter has never forgiven him for anything.

N ov el s

Anger is an existential drama, in which Jacobsen has borrowed narrative structure from psychological crime fiction. The old offender has been granted three years parole and walks out into a personal springtime: a beautiful woman desires him. She is well off and lives in a large house, so Hans moves in with her. His daughter doesn't know that her father is freed and cannot herself break out of her routine – she stays in the same town and tries to build a life as well as she can. These are biting, beautiful life stories of a handful of people and, in particular, an exceptionally powerful recreation of a father-daughter relationship. A great novel, which occupies a key position in Roy Jacobsen's rich literary output.

Roy Jacobsen (1954–) has since his literary début in 1982 with the short story collection Fangeliv evolved into an original, strong and analytical writer with a special interest in the underlying psychology at play in human relationships and actions. He is a wonderful storyteller with obvious political engagement. He has twice been nominated for the Nordic Council's Literary Award: for Seierherrene in 1991, and Frost in 2003. He was also shortlisted for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in 2009 for his novel Hoggerne.

Child Wonder Vidunderbarn

It all begins when a mysterious, little half-sister arrives. Her name is Linda. She carries a blue suitcase with a manual. A manual for Linda. Because Linda is someone quite special. It is the year of the Berlin Wall, of President Kennedy and Jurij Gagarin. Finn lives with his mother in a tiny working class apartment in Oslo. Life is all about a TV, playing with his best friend Freddy, but also about beating up boys in the neighborhood and getting beaten up yourself. This small family’s everyday life is modest and stubbornly social-democratic. But then Linda arrives. Suddenly Finn detects signs of change and secrets about his mother. The foundation of his entire existence is shaking. This powerful depiction of a childhood shows how wonderful and how dangerous it is to be a child. Achilles Akilles

N ov el s

In this novel, the narrator arrives in Røyken on a warm day in August 1997, keen to start teaching Art at the local secondary school. He is bursting with enthusiasm for art and literature and, in particular, for The Odyssey; last year, he based a photographic project on the ancient Greek epic. However, art teaching has been withdrawn and the headmaster instead offers him a locum post as physical education teacher. He soon realises that the PE hall contains unexpected opportunities for experiences and sensations. Before long, he is propelled into a strange reality where the warp in the psychic weave is made up of unlikely combinations, such as ball games and mythology, war and erotic pleasure, past and present time. Akilles is a novel about physical training, impotence and Greek mythology.

“And now that we've finished,” she said, glancing at the door leading to the new bedroom, “just imagine how thrilled I am to find out how he'll react when he comes home!” I knew that it was time to get up and leave the table. I should pick up my toolbox and get out. The sheep were waiting for me in their pen. Then she told me how much Sander had always trusted me. “Why, Sander speaks so much about you I'm almost jealous,” she said with a little laugh. I felt myself blush.

N ov el s

Where is the borderline between friendship and love? If they start drilling for oil in the Lofoten seas, what will the outcome be? The journalist Sander and the sheep farmer Gjermund have been great friends since childhood. Sander, who had married a Russian woman called Tatjana, was injured in a collision with a trailer and left paralysed from the waist down. Gjermund refurbishes Sander and Tatjana's house; he fishes and grows potatoes, as well as looking after his flock of sheep. Physically, he is capable of everything Sander cannot do – sexually, too, as it turns out. But between the three of them, they work out an unconventional solution and Sander takes up the battle against the oil prospectors.

Odd Klippenvåg (1951–) made his literary début with the novel Nattbilde in 1978. He has since published several novels and short story collections, some of which focus on homosexuality. He has also written a trilogy about the lives of classical composers. Klippenvåg is a critically acclaimed writer whose work is of a rare literary quality.

I Could Have Been A Human Being Jeg kunne vært et menneske

N ov el s

Jeg kunne vært et menneske is a story about a mother and daughter who share a flat in Drammen, a busy city with a water front on the Drammen Fjord. When she was younger, the daughter and her partner managed an environmental organisation on the Island of Holmen, in the middle of the Fjord. But as time passed, she somehow lost the grip on her life and she ends up travelling to Morocco with a woman friend. There, she realises that her worth as a person is mainly that of a likely ticket to the West. As the story draws to a close, mother and daughter are once more living together in the Drammen flat. Now that her mother has grown old, the daughter joins up with some younger neighbours who manage an alternative business. Cathrine Knudsen writes with true insight about the circumstances that shape people's lives. Few, if any contemporary Norwegian authors are as perceptive when it comes to the details that fill our existence and often determine our actions.

Look At The Stone Som steinen skinner The critics lavished praise on the two first novels about the family on Mostamägg, which took us into the deep Forest of the Finns, and also let us glimpse life in 19th century Christiania. This, the third book in the series, follows the lives of Finnish forest dwellers. Many of them immigrated to North America.

Other core themes in this book are those of children who cannot bring themselves to forgive their parents and parents who cannot accept their children's choices. Perhaps the most painful state is that of not being able to forgive oneself, albeit for an act committed in deep despair?

N ov el s

This time, we can read about Kerstin and Erik's early experiences in the country where, as soon as they stepped onto the quayside, they were accosted by ”helpers” who preyed on the naivety of the newcomers. Above all though, the narrative is about the lives of Lina and the others, who have stayed in the huge forest on the border between Sweden and Norway, where nature is as important – if not more so – as the people.

Thirst Tørst

The two friends Kristin and Verena grow up together in the northern Norwegian village of Knøsnes. But they go separate ways, only to meet again in Oslo many years later. Both of them dreamt about a life that would be different from what living in Knøsnes seemed to offer, and both hoped to become artists. Confronting life alone meant being catapulted into other trajectories, quite unlike what they had once planned, but they have given up neither on the dream of something different, nor the control of life.

The main character Anna is a young woman who has spent her youth in Lusaka, Zambia. Her strong fascination for Africa makes her return several times. Just as Fvonk is contemplating life in general, a large, shiny, very clean car of a German make glides up the drive and stops without cutting the engine. It is black, has darkened windows and looks official. Fvonk resents all interference by the authorities and this one in particular. A few seconds later, the rear door on the right opens and a woman in her fifties climbs out. Irritatingly, the door makes a hollow, thumping noise – boom, boom, boom – a signal alerting everyone to the fact that it is open. The woman slams the door and checks her surroundings, making sure that she isn't observed by anyone except Fvonk. But there are just the two of them present – this woman and Fvonk.

Leia Starmann's first novel Striper was published in 2006. MAD, her new novel, focuses on the same issues as her first: she writes about young adults adrift in life. Maddy is the nickname of Madelene, the central character. When she was little, Madelene lived with her mother and David, her stepfather. David is selfish and brutal, and his treatment of Madelene is merciless. The girl has to look out for herself, but can rely on her best friend Tommy always being there for her. Madelene is a young adult when we meet her next. She lives on the move, a backpacker's existence in which intoxicating substances play a central role. Tommy is still around, tries to take care of her and also make her more interested in himself. Instead Madelene prefers the unstable Martin, a fateful choice – as time shows. Travelling together in Asia, Martin shows unexpected sides which force her to try to get away from him. Madelene travels on alone in Latin America, carries on taking drugs and becomes seriously ill. This novel reads like a noir road-movie, with a female protagonist. Leia Starmann's style is young, lively and accomplished.

A remarkably up-to-date novel with huge readership potential. Marianne Terjesen's mother was a Jewess and at the age of 16, had to leave Germany. Her grandfather was Haifa's city architect. Terjesen is a journalist and For Leas skyld is her first book of literary fiction.

Three young men from Vienna, all old friends, also arrive at this time. One of them, the architect Peter, has a great vision of how to build in the city of Haifa; he and Miriam fall in love. I Can See in the Dark Jeg kan se i mørket Riktor is the protagonist in Karin Fossum's new crime novel. He has worked for many years in the Løkka nursing home and seems to be normal, quiet and polite. He is often left on his own to manage patients with many and complex care needs. He torments them at every opportunity – pinches the skin at the back of their necks, pulls their hair. Medication that might have soothed their pain is poured down the loo and syringe contents injected into the mattress. Riktor is, simply, the «Nurse from Hell».

He is a loner, but when he encounters Arnfinn, a man with a severe alcohol problem, a kind of friendship grows between them. Then, one day, Riktor comes across Arnfinn extracting money from his wallet. That's the end of Arnfinn: Riktor kills him unhesitatingly. A few days later, DI Randers turns up and charges Riktor with the murder of one of the elderly patients in the nursing home and locks him up for a crime he didn't commit. The tension and suspense of the narrative are as much related to the insight into Riktor's dark mind, as to the case against him. Will he be found innocent of the old lady's murder? Will he be charged with killing Arnfinn? This novel has been sold to four book clubs in Norway. Rights sold to Belgium (WPG), Denmark (Gyldendal), France (Seuil), Sweden (Forum) and UK (harvill Secker).

Karin Fossum (1954–) made her literary début in 1974 with the poetry collection Kanskje

i morgen, for which she won the Vesaas First Writer's Award. She has published books in several genres, but is best known for her crime fiction about Konrad Sejer. Several of her books have been filmed. She has received a number of prestigious awards, including a recent LA Times Book Award for her novel Elskede Poona.

Out of the Ground Wast Thou Taken Av jord er du kommet (working title) There is a mass grave in Oslo's Ris cemetery. Patients from Gaustad Hospital were buried there until the mid1970s. This is the truth.

▶ Cr ime Fic t i o n

Chris Tvedt

After quite a lot of agitation in the media, the government decided to have the grave opened in order to establish the facts about those who were buried there. More than forty skeletons were unearthed. One of them shouldn't have been there … This is not true. But it might have been. Edvard Matre, murder investigator, had returned to the city of Bergen, his home territory. A young woman has been killed, another is in a comatose state, and the two cases have so many features in common that the police begin to fear a serial killer may be at large. Edvard has to find the murderer before he kills again. But it's far from easy. The police have nothing solid to go by, no suspects, motives or clues. It is less than helpful that Edvard is told of results from DNA tests: it seems that one of the bodies buried in the Ris mass grave is likely to be his mother. As far as Edvard knows, his mother died in a road traffic accident some ten years ago and is buried in a Bergen churchyard. Edvard Matre is used to not knowing who the murderer is. Suddenly he cannot tell who he is himself. All of which is far from the truth. But it makes a good story.

The Summer When it all Happened Sommeren da alt hendte “Was it because I had lost Marguerita for good that my father's murder started to obsess me?” This is how this crime novel begins. It deals with kidnapping and a series of strange murders which are committed several years apart. A brutal killing in Tønsberg on a fine summer's day in 1964 has an unexpected resonance in the 1980 murder of a young girl in Oslo. It is hard to recognise the connections, except for those who were close to the victims. Tor Edvin Dahl creates a light-hearted feeling of summer, a time when feelings are easily set aflame, and reminds us of the grim consequences of thoughtless actions.

The Land of Uncertainty Uvisshetens land Illustrated by Ivar O. Rudi

Kolbein Falkeid is a much loved and respected poet. His poems are of high literary worth, but people also understand what they mean. Writing like this is a skill which few have mastered. Because of it, his Samlede dikt (2003) became a best-seller. Many turn to Falkeid when looking for lines of poetry offering comfort, cheer or thoughtful reflections. Uvisshetens land is a selection which contains the best of Falkeid's poetry. The collection is beautifully illustrated by Ivar Rudi, an artist based in Haugesund, and Torgeir Schjerven has written an inspiring afterword. A book that should appeal to absolutely everyone who loves poetry.

Casper André Lugg

A Small Requiem Lite rekviem Casper André Lugg brings out his first book this autumn, in the 20 under 30 series: it is called A Small Requiem, a collection of poetry. The poems focus on experiences of loss, but form together as much a work to control language as grief. The content deals among other things with how a child learns to speak as it confronts the world, and also what can grow or is broken down in the relationship between the dying and the survivors. Lite rekviem is a beautiful, quiet collection of poetry from a very promising young writer.

Fury

Raseri. En hvitings forsøk på en selvbiosofi In Raseri, Cornelius Jakhelln sets about a critical examination of himself and a society in which bewildered young people look for identity and hope to find it in extreme ideologies and symbols. Their anger does not only manifest itself in vandalism, school massacres and terrorist acts, but also in an urge to act, which has powerful artistic and political effects. During his time as a student of philosophy in Paris, Jakhelln felt constantly insecure and took refuge in a northern, Germanic identity. In 2002, Jakhelln formed the heavy metal band Sturmgeist, which five years later was linked to a school massacre in Finland.

Øyvind Strømmen

Right Wing Extremism Høyreekstremisme In the wake of the 22nd July, Strømmen gives an account of the ideological positions which served as points of departure for what became terrorist action. He stresses in particular the so-called counterjihadism, internet radicalisation and movements parallel to islamism. One of the crucial issues for activists within this sphere is the fear that groups within Europe’s immigrant communities are in fact agents ready to carry out a much grander, more invasive plan: a future Eurabia, where non-western settlers are in the majority in Europe and gradually attempt to replace western civilisation and culture with conformity to Muslim doctrine and lack of freedom.

N o n - Fi c t i o n

Using a selection of concrete examples, Strømmen creates a complex but clearly drawn image of anti-islamic Europe – from the author Oriana Fallaci to extremist parties on the right such as Vlaams Belang and Front National, and on to the bloggers interacting in the context of the Vienna school, with the Norwegian Fjordman as one of the most distinctive voices. The author also provides an overview of the history of terrorist action by right-wing extremists during the last few decades.

Øyvind Strømmen (born 1980) has for many years been following the internet exchanges between those who carry on the debate on the extreme right. He is one of the few able to give us badly needed knowledge about this world in the wake of the 22nd of July.

Fridtjof Nansen The Man and His Times

Fridtjof Nansen In this biography of Fridtjof Nansen, the man is portrayed not as a superman, but as a believable human being. He was selfish and restless, a poor father and husband, exceptionally egocentric and a typical know-all.

The First World War was the turning point in Nansen's life. His background in Polar travel formed the basis for his humanist engagement. In other words, the book turns on its head the dramatic script that underlies the arguments of all previous Nansen biographies.

Carl Emil Vogt (1974–) is a historian and writer. His doctoral thesis focused on

Nansen's humanitarian work. He has written about Nansen in a previous book called Nansen's Battle (2007).

N o n - Fi c t i o n

However, Nansen was also gripped by a powerful urge to be an active citizen. His role in Norwegian political life grew critical during the succession from the union with Sweden in 1905. He also displayed considerable international and humanitarian engagement over plans to deal with refugees, prisoners of war and victims of starvation. And – of course – he was a courageous leader of expeditions into the Arctic region.

Haakon and Maud, volume V Haakon & Maud bind V This is the fifth and final volume in the biography of King Haakon and Queen Maud. The book begins in 1929 when Crown Prince Olav travels to Stockholm to bring his young bride home. Now, for the first time, we have an authentic account of Queen Maud's illness and death in exile. The main emphasis of the book is however on the Second World War: we follow the royal family through Norway, as they flee from Oslo, via Hamar, to Molde and Tromsø. In this context, Crown Prince Olav becomes particularly important, as he moves into a leading position in the narrative after his mother's death.

Arne Næss Arne Næss When the philosopher Arne Næss died in 2009, at the age of 97, he had almost acquired the status of being a national icon. Arne Næss was an acute professional philosopher, a fearless debater and a daring expedition leader. In this book, the first biography of Næss, its author presents us with a portrait of the whole man, complete with paradoxes, playfulness and scientific brilliance. Survival: An Account of Cambodia’s Dark Years Overleve In 1975 the Khmer Rouge took over the rule of Cambodia. During their regime, one million people were killed. Sivun Pen tells the story of how he survived years in camps, forced to slave labour – and how he was reunited with his family. Sivun Pen was an ordinary, 23-year-old man, who worked for the Ministry of Finance. He was happily married and had a little boy of six weeks. When the Khmer Rouge took over his office, he was ordered to go to the south. Forget about your family, forget about home and possessions. Go. Protesters were shot.

N o n - Fi c t i o n

The Khmer Rouge dictatorship created an absurd world, in which human life was worthless. When the regime fell in 1979, Sivun was reunited with his wife, but their son had been taken from her. The fate of the boy remained uncertain, until 1991, when they were about to leave a refugee camp and go to Norway: Their son was alive in Canada. This is the story of the Khmer Rouge regime observed by ordinary citizens who had personal experience of the revolution.

He brings out the child's love for and caring attitude towards his alcoholdependent Mum, but also how the hard years of his childhood, marred by unstable family relationships, may be related to his later episodes of physical and mental illness. Cops and Robbers Politi og røver

e Winner of th

Brage Prize 2009

n Best non-fictio

Politi og røver gives a unique insight into the criminal world, which is hidden from people in general. We meet a man who blew up cash machines, drove cars straight into shops in order to rob them and who was accused of the famous Munch-painting robbery. And we meet the police man who spied him. Over a period of three years author Kjetil Østli met these two men who find themselves at each their side of the law.

N o n - Fi c t i o n

By following the cop and the robber Østli shows how crime has toughened up the past twenty years. He also tries to find answers to questions about why someone ends up as a professional criminal. Why does Petter R. Hansen, who used to do so well in school and with respectable parents, turn into a criminal? How does the tiny, skinny and insecure village boy transform into the muscular and respected super undercover cop Johnny Brenna? Another story also grew out of the work with this book. It is about manhood. The robber and the cop share the same male role model, and regard the author a frail academic. What does it mean to be a man today? Rights sold to Poland (Czarne).

Savnet i Baneheia Hilde Moi

Hilde Moi

Missing in Baneheia Savnet i Baneheia This is a powerful, sobering book about a small community hit by a catastrophe. It tells the story of the Baneheia-case and what it came to mean to the individuals concerned and to the town of Kristiansand.

N o n - Fi c t i o n

Hilde Moi uses a highly literary form of reportage for her account of how the police worked to investigate the murders, how the court case proceeded to a final sentence and how those affected by the events have coped with their lives afterwards. But, above all, it is a narrative of how people deal with bereavement. The author writes in detached, but moving prose about how the bereaved experienced the days of the murders, and the years that have passed since then.

The Legacy of the Satanic Verses Arven etter Sataniske vers

N o n - Fi c t i o n

In February 1989, a so-called fatwa, or death sentence, was issued against Salman Rushdie, the author of the book entitled The Satanic Verses. Now, 20 years later, UN member states are discussing options for outlawing abuse of religions and Norway's government had to retreat when, some two years ago, it attempted to remove the blasphemy paragraphs from the law. Religious symbols and feelings are used as weapons in political conflicts. The author calls for a policy based on clear principles, which would apply in cases concerning equal treatment of faiths and philosophies of life, of freedom of expression and criticism of religions. Austenå is a journalist and, although her arguments are based on the Norwegian situation, she also refers to the debate in Great Britain, Denmark, The Netherlands and Sweden.

Sorry!

Unnskyld! Arguably, we have an American president to thank for the most famous apology since the end of WW2. He had had a brief affair with Monica Lewinsky, who of course didn't manage to keep their secret for long. What followed was predictable: a complete humiliation in front of a watching world. But before that moment, he had been through the mill, from rejecting all accusations, to denial, partial admission and, finally, his unforgettable apology on 17th August 1998.

N o n - Fi c t i o n

Risdal's book is an informative, amusing survey of different kinds of apologies, with a main focus on the official versions. He discusses notable apologies made by politicians, sportsmen and women, and other celebrities. It is an exciting analysis, but he also goes on to present examples of crises management in business situations. Why should it be that the planned apology doesn't work at the critical time, even though your PR advisers tell you to lie low?

Something To Believe In

A Philosopher’s Thoughts about Faith in Our Time

Noe å tro på Many are searching for something to believe in and contemporary society lets us pick and choose: Christianity, Buddhism – even Angels. Other options include the conviction that there is no room for religious beliefs today.

Henrik Syse (1966–) is a philosopher who has focus on ethics. He is the senior researcher at the Institute for Peace Studies (PRIO) and a sought-after speaker.

N o n - Fi c t i o n

Henrik Syse wants to tidy up and sort the arguments in this contrarian world, opening the door for the reader to join an open conversation about faith. Syse's own opinion is that faith gives meaning to life and fills an important space in modern society; an anchor during periods of powerful currents and rapid change. An aware relationship to our own traditional beliefs will also help us understand the faiths and convictions of others.

The Horse

A Magic Companion from Norwegian Ancient History

Hesten The author has written a book about the horse, the beautiful and wise animal who has been a human companion since times immemorial. Another strand in her account is the archaeologist who interprets ancient communities and introduces us into another world of ideas and beliefs, alien myths and practices.

N o n - Fi c t i o n

Throughout known time, horses have played important roles in everyday life. They have been hunted and eaten, and used for transport in both war and peace time. Man and horse have existed side by side in a working relationship, but in addition the horse has been important as a symbol. Horse images have been found carved on rocks and incorporated into jewellery, belts and other craft objects. The horse is also part of old literary sources, and has had important ritual functions as a symbol of both fertility and death. Magical qualities were ascribed to this animal, which was thought able to cross the boundary between life and death.

This book takes a broad view of Christmas and considers it in the contexts of theology and folk memory, history and anthropology, art and cultural history, offering perspectives from both the past and the present. It is a rich and fascinating account, chockfull of tales and facts about the historical and religious basis for the celebrations, and also the emergence of different practices over time. It is as enjoyable and instructive to read from beginning to end, as it is to dip into it now and then.

A Cocktail of Chemicals En cocktail av kjemikalier This book is a must-read for all of us who feel uncertain about the chemicals in the everyday stuff we surround ourselves with. It does no harm to know a little more about what is concealed inside the bottles and jars that we keep in, for instance, our bathrooms, kitchens and utility rooms. On your skiing trip, if you enjoy a smooth run as opposed to a rough one, depends – just as the Gore-tex anorak and the sunglasses – on an array of fascinating chemicals. And what is going on when Dad sets a yeast dough, Mum cuts up onions or kid brother pops popcorn? What kind of thing is ethanol and caffeine? The advertisements boast that anti-wrinkle creams work, but do they really?

Understanding the Power Game

How to Lead and the Art of Influence

Forstå maktspillet The workplace is an arena where many forms of manoeuvring for power and influence take place. For your own comfort’s sake, and the safety of your career, it’s useful to be able to crack the codes in your colleagues’ power games and leadership bids.

N o n - Fi c t i o n

Read this book, in which you’ll learn much about what to keep an eye on, what you should avoid and how you go about reading situations. What happens at the top? How are the top positions filled, and who decides? Who is influential in important decision-making? Who can directly affect your working situation? And what can you do to influence others? All this is crucial knowledge, not necessarily for your direct benefit, but to avoid unpleasant situations or surprises.

Wilderness Quiz Villmarksquiz

In tents and cabins, round the camp fires or simply back at home, a quiz is a great way to pass the time, fun as well as useful. In this book, the authors have collected questions and answers which add up to important knowledge for all who enjoy wild nature. Mostly, these facts are good to know for the majority of us, but the emphasis is on basic awareness of information that would be invaluable when out hiking.

N o n - Fi c t i o n

The book is divided into 25 categories, which are sorted according to the main theme and sub-divided into sections. Lars Monsen is famous for getting a fire going with only one match, so it goes without saying that Laying a Fire is the first category. Questions follow about subjects like setting up a camp, clothing, equipment, food, transport etc. Skills such as direction finding, driving with dogs, hunting and fishing are given plenty of space, as have technical issues like survival, First Aid, safety and weather. Now and then general knowledge tests turn up, with questions about geography and biology, notably showing a great deal of interest in identifying species of animals, birds and fish.

The Wilderness Experience Up Along Norway and Back

Opplevelse villmark Like so many other people, the Simonsen brothers were inspired by classical tale of the wilderness Norge på langs by the adventurer Lars Monsen. In the summer of 2006, they started out from Grense Jakobselv, a small community in northern Norway, near the border with Russia. Their intention was to walk the entire distance down to Halden, along the border with Russia, Finland and Sweden, following in the footsteps of Lars Monsen and Trond Strømdahl.

N o n - Fi c t i o n

Not everything works according to plan. A large, ice-free waterway becomes a challenge if your intention was to cross it on skis, pulling a pulk – a robust kind of sledge. Storms, frozen limbs and illnesses are always unexpected, and lying low in bad weather can drag down both food supplies and tempers. But the brothers share a resilient turn of mind and an incredible ability to turn adversity into something positive.

Per Simonsen (1979–) and Bjørn Simonsen (1981–) grew up in a family with a rather above average interest in leisure activities. They lived at Jørpeland in Rogaland, and being taken on innumerable hill-walking trips, before as well as after they learnt to walk, have left their mark. 122

De bortgjemte The most severely ill patients lie in sound- and lightproof rooms, masks covering their eyes, flat on their back in beds they never leave and hardly able to bear drawing a deep breath while resting. On the Stage of Your Life HOW TO BE A GOOD COMMUNICATOR På scenen i ditt eget liv A former stage director, Else-Barratt Due teaches skills, drawn from the theatre, for you to use at committee meetings or when lecturing. How to communicate an argument, give a lecture or do a presentation? How to reach out to an audience and engage the listeners? What to do if you’re nervous? And how should you construct your manuscript, what elements should it contain and in which order?

Else Barratt-Due (1954–) graduated in dramatic arts and has an American postgraduate degree in stage direction. She is an experienced drama teacher and has taught both at secondary school and university level. During the last 18 years she has been employed by NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting). In 2006, she launched TELLtheSTORY, a framework for her courses on presentation, communication and dramaturgy.

The writing combines theory with practical exercises.

N o n - Fi c t i o n

This book introduces you to the art of presentation, imparting knowledge and dramaturgy, going through the different steps in the preparation essential for being a good communicator. It teaches presentational techniques, stressing the importance of correct breathing, diction, voice production and body language, as well as providing insights into ways to prepare oneself mentally and cope with stress and nervousness in anticipation of being in front of an audience. It is also a thorough guide to dramaturgical approaches to structure and shape a presentation. And, what mustn’t be forgotten: how to end well.

135

Emotion and Common Sense Thought Field techniques in practice

Følelser og fornuft Thought Field techniques make up a modern therapeutic approach, which combines Eastern knowledge of the body’s energy pathways with more traditional teachings in psychology. While the therapist taps critical points on the body surface, the patient focuses on her or his problem and describes it. A process begins which alters the patient’s thought patterns, and causes pain and other problems to disappear.

N o n - Fi c t i o n

Thought Field Therapy aims at changing the intensity of unpleasant sensations in such a way as to correct their relationship with thoughts and experiences. If strong emotions can be made to fade, the outcome could be peace of mind and absence of physical discomfort.

The Parental Role

You Are the Grown-up!

Foreldrerollen Many parents take an indulgent approach to bringing up their children, who are offered every opportunity to choose and make up their own minds. We hope for happy, contented offspring but instead end up with little princes and princesses, who haven’t learnt regard for others. Such children tend to be self-assured and strongwilled, but also demanding and ungrateful. Their expectations of attention and assistance can create trouble at school.

Anne Nielsen (1958–) trained as a primary school teacher and talk therapist, and has long experience of working in nursery schools and after-school clubs. She lectures, writes, manages her company Foreldrepraxis and also works on course development in Læringsverkstedet, a company specialising in teaching the very young.

Recover power for parents – you will become a secure grown-up whom children trust!

N o n - Fi c t i o n

The author analyses different styles of upbringing and the practice of personal authority, as well as how children develop, gain maturity and learn. She explains why contemporary upbringing tends to be child-indulgent and what the consequences are. Bringing up children requires strength of purpose and will, so that parents can hold firm when the children don’t like what we have decided.

Real Food Ekte mat

For Andreas Viestad, «real food» means two things: pleasure and also the satisfaction that comes from eating well, preferably every single day. If food is to count as real, it should have a history, an origin. What is it we need in order to cook real food? We need knowledge and action. If we know something about our food, we will find cooking it easier. And it adds to the enjoyment at the table if we have ourselves added an extra ingredient to the meal we are serving, be it something grown in the garden or balcony tub or window box, or things gathered on nature walks. Ekte mat is a unique cookbook. Although the themes are large, the recipes are easy and the book is fine for ordinary use if you have leafed through it, found something that looks nice and want to cook it for a meal for yourself, or for family and friends.

Hageselskapets sommerblomster contains information about 250 genera and species. Every specimen is illustrated and key data such as height, flower colours, growing conditions and areas of use are briefly stated, together with a fuller description of the plant. The great majority of species are quite common and available in most well-stocked garden centres, but space has been set aside for quite a few «specials» as well. These are perhaps not on the shelves of most garden centres, but definitely not impossible to get – from seed, if all else fails.

Some people like high-necked sweaters, some prefer a lower neckline. Some think a jacket shape would be more practical. To illustrate her point, the author has started from one pattern and changed the instructions in many different ways. She has also included a whole lot of instruction for knitting mittens, hats, scarfs and bags, adding descriptions of how to do braiding and pearl-stiching.
