Enjoy a cablecar ride from the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe to the Pasterze glacier

After the spectacular drive on the Grossglockner High-Alpine Road, you park your car at the famous Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe, where your day is about to get even more exciting: stretched out before you is the Pasterze, the largest glacier in the Eastern Alps. When it was first built, the cableway still reached the eternal ice; now, however, the glacier has significantly receded — so that today’s passengers have to add on a 60-minute walk to reach its frozen shores. The cableway runs between the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe (top station) and the valley station that once marked the beginnings of the glacier — a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

The Glacier Cableway starts directly at the famous Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe, taking you down to the valley station, where you embark on a 60-minute walk to the glacier’s edge. 9 km of eternal ice stretch out before you, overlooked by Austria’s highest mountain, the 3798-metre-high Grossglockner. The Pasterze also marks the official starting point of the renowned Alpe-Adria-Trail – a long-distance trekking route leading from our high-alpine glacier all the way to Italy’s Adriatic coast.

Hiking along the Glacier Trail

The Glacier Trail is a spectacular, moderately challenging hiking route leading from the Glocknerhaus (situated directly on the Grossglockner High-Alpine Road) to the Pasterze, the largest glacier in the Eastern Alps. The path takes you through the stunning, high-alpine landscape of the National Park, all the way to the so-called ‘Hufeisenbruch’ — an enormous glacial fracture from which the fledgling waters of the Moell river are released. The hike starts at the Glocknerhaus, directly on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. Duration: around 4 hours; altitude difference: approx. 400m. While the route is easy to manage in terms of technique, hikers must be surefooted. Suitable for children from around 10 and up; best time: July to October. Our tip: Join the guided tour with a national park ranger.
