Director of midd.data, 2020-

The Middlebury Initiative for Data and Digital Methods, or “midd.data” for short, is Middlebury’s new initiative to provide equitable and inclusive access to the tools of empirical research, data analysis, and critical digital scholarship from the moment students arrive on campus. Midd.data seeks to prepare students to evaluate data and data-driven arguments from a variety of perspectives, discover insights from data both independently and in collaboration with others, form their own data-driven arguments, and effectively communicate their findings through a variety of media.

Founding member of the Academic Freedom Alliance

The Academic Freedom Alliance (AFA) is a non-profit organization whose members are dedicated to protecting the rights of faculty members at colleges and universities to speak, instruct, and publish without fear of sanction or punishment. We uphold the principles that are required if scholars are to fulfill their vocation as truth-seekers and colleges and universities are to be faithful to their mission as truth-seeking institutions.

Previous major committee service

Faculty Strategy Committee (elected), 2018-2022

The Strategy Committee represents the College faculty in long-range strategic planning with the administration and Board of Trustees. Though the committee is concerned primarily with the College, it will also represent the faculty in shared-governance discussions on matters of common interest to the College, the Schools, and the Institute. The committee is also charged with engaging the faculty, administration, and trustees on developments in higher education (both nationally and globally), as they might affect Middlebury College.

Chair of the Ad hoc Committee on Empirical Research and Teaching, 2019

This committee was appointed by the Provost’s office and Faculty Strategy Committee to develop a long-term strategic framework for furthering data and digital education and scholarship at Middlebury. The committee’s proposal eventually became the midd.data initiative.

Educational Affairs Committee (elected), 2017-2018

The EAC has two primary functions: to oversee the general direction of the College’s curriculum and to make recommendations on staffing and the allocation of teaching resources.

Committee on handbook policies on inclusion and academic freedom (appointed), 2017-2018

Our committee drafted the new introduction to Middlebury’s Handbook, which describes three pillars supporting our education mission: the right of academic freedom, the responsibility of personal and professional integrity, and the value of respect. Following a vote of the full faculty, this language was adopted for the Handbook.
