HONDA N600 Hondamatic: £659 (incl. P.T.)
A jolly little Jap with a two-cylinder air-cooled engine which has an astonishingly high power-output for its capacity of 598 c.c. Much of Honda's racing motor-cycle experience and knowledge has gone into the overhead camshaft power-unit and a nippy performance is the result. The engine drives the front wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox, but there is also an available automatic transmission. It is a baby in the Mini tradition but uses larger wheels. The spare wheel lives under the bonnet with the engine, freeing useful luggage space in the rear boot.

The two-door Honda Z debuted in October. It features an air-cooled, 354 cc, 2-cylinder SOHC engine with a 4- or 5-speed transmission driving the front wheels. Outputs are 31 hp at 8500 rpm the Act and Pro versions, and 36 hp at 9000 rpm for the sportier TS and GS models. The 598 cc model is designated for export. The Z has coil sprung, independent front suspension and leaf springs on a beam axle rear suspension. The interior accommodates two adults, with a very small rear seat. A rear glass hatch with a black plastic surround opens to a shallow cargo area. Below the cargo area a compartment, accessible via a lid beneath the number plate, holds the spare wheel and tools.

The two-door coupé bodystyle, with a longer and sportier looking front end, was added to the lineup in February 1970. The same two engines (95 and 110 PS) were on offer, marketed as the Coupé 7 and the Coupé 9.
