Grossglockner is Austria's highest peak at 3798 m above sea level . It is quite challenging to climb. You need the right preparation and equipment. But if you would like to see it anyway, take a fascinating ride along the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse high mountain route. It is 48 km long and offers an unforgettable visual experience. Along it you will find many viewpoints from which you will be able to admire the panorama of the Hohe Tauern Mountains.

The road ends at the Tourist Center on Wzniesienia im. Emperor Franz Joseph. From there, you'll see Grossglockner as well as Glacier Pasterze below. There are several hiking trails in the area, also short and fairly straight. Visit e.g. the Wilhelm Swarovski. These areas are also famous for a large number of marmots . Remember to watch out for sandwiches or other food, as clever animals are eager to steal them.

For whom?

The Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse ride will be a real treat for fans of road trips and amazing views. A visit to the Pasterze Glacier is a great option if you love mountain views, and also if you plan to trek in the Alps.

Sagritzerwirt

A great guesthouse in a charming mountain town. I liked everything there. Both the architecture of the building, its decor and the breakfasts served there. In addition, the owners are very nice and willing to advise what and where to see.

Camping Gasthof Zirknitzer

We stayed at the Zirknitzer guesthouse, but there is actually a campsite there as well. The area is incredibly picturesque, so we recommend staying here for a few days. The guesthouse itself offers quite simple, not even home-like conditions. This is probably why the price was low compared to other accommodations.

Ferienhäuser Thalbach

We stayed there for one night, after driving the mountain route to the Pasterze Glacier. A very nice place, with an atmosphere, offering wonderful views of the mountains. In fact, later we regretted not extending our stay by at least one day. Our apartment had a balcony and a kitchenette. The price also included breakfast.

Pension Bergkristall

If you are going on the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße route, I recommend stopping in Heiligenblut. I had the opportunity to stay overnight at the Bergkristall guesthouse. In my opinion, this is a very good choice. Not too expensive. The price also included a tasty breakfast. The apartment was very spacious and, in addition to the bathroom, also had a kitchenette.
