Bauer's biographer Harald Schiller wrote the following about the publication "Troll": "In 1915, he [John Bauer] published an album of fairytale images in black lithography titled 'Troll.' Carl Larsson wrote the preface, in which he, among other things, stated: 'How difficult it is to avoid a certain dryness, but how softly and caressingly has this lucky boy made these small paintings appear, how deep and warm the black, and how radiant the white!' For us today, Bauer's unmistakable style is part of our shared treasure trove of fairy tales, and his characters have become archetypes for the trolls and princesses we might encounter in the woods.
