In 2008, the City of Oslo decided to commission a new museum building for the existing Munch Museum, whose structure could no longer adequately preserve and showcase the extensive Edvard Munch collection. This is where the story of “Lambda” begins. The name Lambda initially served as a pseudonym, ensuring the anonymity of the architects in the international competition, and the code name soon found its way into the public realm and the media. The firm behind the moniker Lambda – Madrid-based firm estudioHerreros – won the competition and designed the new Munch Museum building, which opened in 2021.
The book that now shares the name Lambda is more than a mere documentation of the new museum building; it plunges deep into the estudioHerreros archive and reveals the “paperwork” that rarely sees the light of day, uncovering important, behind-the-scenes political, social, and technical contexts that shaped the project.
Lambda is further enriched by contributions from esteemed authors who use the project as a starting point to explore topical issues, such as the role of museums in shaping history and envisioning a brighter future, the power of dialogue as a design tool, environmental sustainability, and the impact of experimental architecture in large-scale projects. A further dimension is added through photo essays by Iwan Baan, and Adrià Goula.
estudioHerreros is based in Madrid with offices in New York City and Mexico City. Partners Juan Herreros and Jens Richter focus the firm’s practical work on the impact of architecture on culture, social issues, and sustainable building. These topics align with their academic endeavors. Juan Herreros teaches at the Higher Technical School of Architecture of Madrid (ETSAM) and the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP) at Columbia University in New York City. Jens Richter, a partner since 2014, has taken his teachings to institutions in Kassel, Beijing, and Helsinki, among others.
