UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFTCE.
MAHLON H. FINE, OF AVOCA,'PENNSYLVANIA.
BEDSPREAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 768,119, dated August 23, 1904-.
Application tiled June 27, 1903.
To (LN, 7,071,071?, it naa/y cm1/cern:
Be it known that I, MAHLoN H. FINE, a citizen'of the United States, residing at Avoca, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and-use ful Improvements in Bedspreads, of which the following is a specification.
y This invention relates to bedclothing; and the objects of the invention are to provide a bedspread having a non-porous middle por# tion and weighted edges to improve the appearance of such spreads, to improve the form so that they will more completely conform to the body of the user without raising the edges thereof, and other objects,as are herein specified, and pointed out in the claims'.v l
To these ends the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts as herein specified, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l shows a top plan view of a bedspread constructed according to my invention. laid open. Fig. 2 shows a cross-section taken on the line y y of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 isa view in cross-section taken on the linean of Fig. l. Fig. ishows a cross-section taken on the line t a of Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a view showing one of my bedspreads in use.
Similar characters of reference denote like and corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, l denotes a non-porous fabric-such as rubber gossamer, rubber cloth, oil-cloth, and the like-and it is cut in a rectangular piece and the said rectangular piecel folded into a smaller rectangular piece by folds 2 3 and 4L 5, the folds 2 3 extending entirely across the spread and the foldsi 5 under the border at 6, but not extending to the border 7 in'the vicinity of 8. Iprefer to have the border in the vicinity of 8 constructed full, so that the spread is not truly rectangular, but has its one end fuller at 8, so
that the end between the corners 9 and lO is4 Serial No. 163,408. (No modelJ intended to accommodate the shoulder and I neck of the user. The border is secured to the edge of the spread by suitable stitching, which at the folded portions extends through the edges of the several overlapping folds, and thereby holds the folds in place.
In using my spread the folds may be smoothed out of the surface near the center, in which condition there is looseness or bagginess of the center part, so that the tendency of the spread is to fit over the person using it in such a way as .not to readily slip off, and when campers or soldiers who are obliged to sleep on the ground or iioor use the same it forms a practically air-tight ycovering in consequence of its edges conforming to the ground all` around the user, save only at that portion from which the head and neck extend.
. Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is-
l."I `he herein-described bedspread, comprising a central part having a loose, baggy center, suitably folded, one of said folds terminating in a flared gathered portion and a border secured to the spread and holding the folds in place.
2. The herein-described bedspread, comprising a central part having a loose, baggy center, suitably folded, one of said folds terminating ina iiared gathered portion and a border secured to the spread and holding the folds in place.
3. In a bedspread of the kind described, a central part made from non-porous material, folds in said materialextending to three sides thereof, and a border made from weighted fringe around said bedspread, the said folds extending under and secured to said border at three sides thereof, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
