4 Claims. (Cl. -334) This invention relates to bed clothing, and more particularly to an improved bed sheet or blanket or other bed covering construction; whereby to facilitate making up a bed in'improved manner so as to avoid undesirable bed clothing constrictions upon the feet or other parts of the sleepers body. The objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent in detail upon reading the following specification and referring to the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIG. 1 is a top perspective view showing a mattress made up with a bed sheet in accordance with the invention;
FIG. 2 illustrates how the bed sheet of .FIG. 1 may be retracted towards an opened up condition, facilitating getting into and out of the bed;
FIGS. 3 and 4 are sections taken along lines 3-3 and '44 of FIG. 1 respectively;
FIG. 5 is a fragmentary section corresponding to the foot end portion of FIG. 4 but showing a bed sheet, blanket, and spread, all made up together in accord with the invention;
FIG. 6 is a sectional view taken as along line 6-6 of FIG. 2, and showing how a bed made up in accordance with the invention avoids constriction upon the feet or other parts of the sleepers body;
FIGS. 7 and 8 are views of two typical plan form modi fications of bed clothing made in accordance with the invention;
FIG. 9 corresponds to FIG. 3 but shows how a bed sheet and bed blanket may be made up separately and independently in accordance with the invention;
FIG. 10 is a fragmentary cut-away foot end corner portion of FIG. 2;
FIG. 11 is a fragmentary head end view, showing how the upper end of the bed clothing unit may be pulled down to facilitate entrance to the bed after it is made up in accordance with the invention; and
FIG. 12 is a fragmentary view corresponding to FIGS.
7, 8 but showing a still further modified form of sheet corner construction.
As shown by way of example herein at FIGS. 1-7, the invention may be embodied in a bed sheet designated generally at 15; and as shown in FIGS. 16, the sheet 15 is illustrated as being made up on a mattress 16. As seen best in FIG. 7, the sheet 15 is provided with series of guide lines 20, 21, 22 running lengthwise of the sheet along opposite sides thereof; and also a series of guide lines 23, 24, -25 running across the bottom end of the sheet. The guide lines 20, 23 are positioned on the sheet to conform to the planform dimensions of the mattress upon which the sheet is to be used. All of the guide lines may be either printed or woven or embroidered in the fabric or otherwise provided, and preferably will comprise portions of the ornamentation of the sheet (or blanket or other covering, as the case may be).
To make up a bed with a sheet or other covering as shown in FIG. 7, it will first be spread fiat-wise upon the mattress and located thereon so that the guide lines 20 will lie along the side edges .of the mattress, and so that the guide line 23 will lie along the bottom edge of the mattress. Commencing at either side, the sheet will then be lifted along its edges and the sheet material accordion-folded thereunder into the form shown in FIG. 3; the extreme edge portions of the sheet being draped down along the sides of the mattress and tucked thereunder as shown at *3030 in FIG. 3. of the sheet is then similarly folded accordion-wise on top of the mattress, and finally tucked under the mattress as shown at 32 (FIG. 4). The accordion folds are guided by the lines 21, 22 along the sides, and by lines 24, 25 across the foot end. 01', if preferred, the foot end of the sheet may be first folded and tucked under as explained hereinabove, following which the side edges are folded and tucked.
Note that as shown in FIG. 5, pluralities of bed clothing pieces such as a sheet, a blanket, and a bedspread, or the like may with equal facility be folded together as a .unit; and in any case the bed covering will thereupon be adapted to simply lift up to provide a freely open enclosure for the sleeper. Thus, for example, when he thrusts his feet down into the lower end of the bed as shown in FIG. 6, the bed clothing will not have that aggravating tendency to pull down upon the sleepers toes. Yet, when the bed is made-up in accord with the invention, it provides as neat and tidy an appearance as any bed made up in conventional manner. e
To reduce the volume of material at the foot corners of the bed, the sheet maybe cut out as indicated at 3434, FIG. 7. Or, as shown in FIG. 8, the foot corners of the sheet may be out out and further bevelled as shown at 36*36, .to still further reduce the material piled up at the corners, and slits as indicated at-38-38 may be provided to ease the corner overlap and fold material volume. A still further reduction of folded material volume may be attained by fully cutting out the corners of the bed clothing at the foot end, as shown in FIG. 12. As shown at 41), the. head end of the sheet may be formed with a chin flap portion adapted to be back-folded over the .top edge of a blanket or the like such as may also be made up with the sheet; and as indicate-d at 42 (FIGS. 8, 11) the sheet may be bevelled off at each side adjacent the head end to reduce the length of the side tuck-ins under the mattress, thus permitting fuller opening of the bed without disturbing the side tuck-ins.
Whereas the drawing herewith shows the bed clothing to have been folded under along the guide lines at the sides and foot end of the bed, it is to be understood that the features of the invention may be obtained with equal facility by reverse folding of the edges, upwardly and over on top of the bed sheet along the guide lines 20, 21 and 23, 24 and then draping the remainders down around the sides of the matteress and tucking as shown in the drawing. Also, note that whereas in FIG. 5 all three of the pieces of bed clothing are interfolded as a unit, in lieu thereof the pieces may be individually and independently folded, as the single piece is shown to be folded in FIG. 3.
Thus, it will be appreciated that this invention provides a neatly made-up bed which is adapted to accommodate a sleeper more comfortably than heretofore. Also, the invention adapts a shorter bed to comfortably accommodate a longer person, when compared to conventional arrangements. unobstrusive, inexpensive to provide, and inno-wise objectionable. It will of course be appreciated that although only a few forms of the invention have been illustrated and described in detail herein, various changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the following claims.
