Description

Jan. 17, 1956 v. T. ROBERTS 2,730,728
DIVIDED BED COVER Filed Dec. 11 195] INVENTOR. fir fru'a Z'Eoer/. BY
United States Patent 6 DIVIDED BED COVER Virginia T. Roberts, Dearborn, Mich.
Application December 11, 1951, Serial No. 260,953
1 Claim. (Cl. -334) This invention relates to a divided bed-cover such as a double blanket used on a double bed.
When two people sleep in a double bed it is seldom that both persons desire the same warmth of bedclothes. One person is usually more cold-blooded than the other, and in cold weather desires an extra cover. It is difficult to suit both persons under all temperature conditions with the usual bed-cover such as blankets.
The present invention solves this problem by providing a bed-cover which is partially divided into two sections which are readily separable or re-united. The improved bed-cover can therefore be used to cover either both occupants or only one occupant of the bed.
The drawings illustrate the invention as applied to a blanket, but obviously it may be used with a comforter or any other form of cover for a double bed.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a blanket incorporating the invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a standard double bed showing the blanket prepared for use.
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are fragmentary perspective views showing alternate fastening means.
The blanket illustrated in Fig. 1 has a main body which is severed by a slit 11 which extends part way down the length of the blanket, leaving a portion 12 extending continuously across the bottom. The slit 11 is offset from the centerline of the blanket, so that the upper part of the blanket has a wide covering portion 13 and a narrow covering portion 14.
The slit 11 is closed or opened by any convenient separable fastening, as by the zipper 15 shown in Fig. 1. The zipper is normally concealed by suitable binding 16, and similar binding is used at 16 and 17 to finish oil? the top and bottom edges of the blanket.
The manner of use of the divided blanket will be clear from Fig. 2 which shows it applied to a standard double bed. The continuous full-width portion 12 at the bottom permits the bed to be made up in the usual manner, with this lower end of the blanket tucked under the mattress, and permits the use of mitered corners, or whatever style of bed-making is used in the particular residence.
The wide portion 13 is to be used as a covering for the "ice person who desires more warmth, and it is made wider so that it will drape down over the person and maintain a complete coverage. The narrow portion 14 is used on the side of the person desiring less covering, since it can be separated and turned down when its warmth is not needed. In Fig. 2 the bed has been made up with the wide covering portion 13 pulled up to covering position, and the narrow portion 14 folded back. at the foot of the bed.
Obviously, when the two parts 13 and 1 are secured together by the separable fastening the covering may be used exactly like an ordinary double blanket to cover both occupants of the bed.
Instead of the zipper 15 any other separable fastening may be used, as the snap fasteners 18 shown in Pig. 3, the buttons 19 shown in Fig. 4, or the tie ribbons 21 used in Fig. 5.
The principle of the divided bed-cover has been illustrated in connection with a blanket, but it can of course be applied to a comforter, or to any other type of cover used to provide warmth for a bed.
It will be clear from the above description that the invention provides an efiicient yet inexpensive means to provide for diiferent degrees of warmth for the two occupants of a double bed. The provision of the separable fastening adds but little to the cost of the bed cover, but it adds greatly to the comfort of the users.
According to the provision of the patent statutes, I have explained the principle of my invention and have illustrated and described what I now consider to represent its best embodiment. However, I desire to have it understood that, within the scope of the appended claim, the invention may be practiced otherwise than as specifically illustrated and described.
I claim:
A Warmth-retaining bed-cover of an overall size to fit a standard double bed, the cover being formed with a slit extending from one end partway through its length leaving a full width portion at the other end, the slit being located approximately one-third the way in from one side of the blanket so as to form a wide unslotted covering portion adapted to extend over two-thirds of the bed to cover one of the persons occupying the bed, and to form a narrow covering portion adapted to extend over the remaining width of the bed and adapted to be folded down when the other person occupying the bed does not desire the warmth of the cover, and separable fastening means arranged to close the slit when the bed-cover is used to cover both occupants of the bed.
