Description
p 28, 1954 H. M. LIEBERTHAL BLANKET Filed Aug. 21, 1952 A 770/? AM Ya Patented Sept. 28, 1954 UNITED STAT rm OFFICE 1 Claim.
My invention relates'to new and useful improvements in blankets and more particularly to a blanket for use on a double bed, the primary object being to so construct the blanket as to permit a portion thereof to be used as a covering for one person in the bed while the remaining portion of the blanket is disposed out of use by the other person sleeping in the bed.
A still further object of the invention resides in constructing the blanket with a slit, or the like, extending longitudinally thereof for the major portion of the length of said blanket with means for readily closing the slit at the will of the user.
A still further object resides in providing a blanket with a slit having a slide fastener connected to the edges of the slit portions so as to enable the users thereof to effect a covering for either one or two persons sleeping in a double bed.
Still another object of the invention resides in providing a covering flap for the top edge of the blanket to enclose the end of the fastening means to prevent the latter from contacting the bodies of the users.
A further object resides in providing a blanket of the character mentioned which is comparatively simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efiicient and useful in operation.
With these and numerous other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of the application:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a double bed with two occupants and my improved blanket applied to use, disclosing one portion thereof covering one of the occupants and the other portion disposed to ineffective position;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary elevation of the rear of a blanket embodying my new invention;
Figure 3 is a similar view on a slightly enlarged scale showing the front of the blanket;
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3, with the enclosing flap in raised position and the slide fastener moved to a position where a portion of the blanket is separated from the other portion thereof, and
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary elevation of a portion of the blanket showing the lower end of the split portion of the blanket.
It is a known fact that many persons occupying double beds with two occupants for sleeping purposes have difliculties in satisfying the requirements of said occupants, because of the fast that some persons desire or require more or less covering for comfort. Where a double blanket is used for two occupants of a double bed and one only desires to be fully covered, difficulties are encountered and frequently arguments result. My invention contemplates the provision of a blanket, comfort, or other similar covering for a double bed which is bifurcated longitudinally from one end thereof and provided with a fastening means, so that the garment may be used in fastened condition to cover two occupants of a bed or split so as to enable one occupant to be covered and the other occupant remain uncovered, as desired.
To this end, I provide a blanket I, and while it is termed a blanket and shown as such, it will be understood that same may be a comfort, sheet, or other bed covering, of a size for use on a double bed, the latter being designated in the drawing by the numeral 2. This blanket has its edges bound as shown at 3 and the same is bifurcated from its upper edge longitudinally to a point adjacent the lower edge. Stitched to the bifurcated edges of the blanket are the tapes 4 and 5 carrying the teeth 6 of a slide fastener, the slide proper being designated by the numeral 1 carrying the hinged finger tab 8. Obviously, the sections of the blanket may be separated or joined together readily by movement of the slide in one direction or the other.
The front face of the blanket adjoining the bifurcated edges is covered with binding strips 9, the lower edges of which are covered with a securing tab, or the like, In. This is best illustrated in Figures 1 and 5 showing the front face of the blanket.
When the slide 1 is moved to its uppermost I position to fasten the bifurcated edges of the blanket together, it is desirable to cover the same so that the metal will not contact the bodies of the occupants of the bed. I have, therefore, provided a covering flap, or the like, H which is stitched at its lower edge for a portion of its width to the rear face of one of the sections of the blanket at the upper binding thereof, as clearly shown in Figure 4 of the drawing. The stitching used for the binding 3 may also be used for the stitching of this flap H in position. The flap is of such width and height so as to project beyond the upper edge of the blanket and also project beyond the one bifurcated edge of the section to which said flap is secured. This is clearly shown in Figures 1 and 4 of the drawing. On the inner face of the flap ll adjacent the upper edge thereof and adjacent the side edges are portions 12 of snap fasteners and cooperating portions of snap fasteners, designated by the numeral 13 are secured to the outer face of the binding 3 at the upper edge of the blanket. Thus, when the snap fastener is "moved to close the split sections of the blanket, the flap 1 I may be turned down and the fasteners 12 and I3 engaged one with the other to cover the slide portion of the fastener. This is clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawing. When it is desired to sever the sections of the blanket so as to permit use thereof separately, the flap is raised, as bestshown in Figure 4 of the drawing, and the slide moved downwardly. Thus, it will be seen that the blanket employing this construction may be used as a unit for covering two occupants of a bed, or when .desired, may be separated into its respective sections so that one section may be used-as a covering and the other'section disposed to an ineffective position, as best illustrated in Figure -1 of the drawing.
From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved bed covering, which, as aforesaid, may bein the form of a blanket, comfort, sheet, or the like, the construction thereof and the method of applying same to use will be readily understood, audit will be seen that I have provided a comparatively inexpensive and efiicient means for carrying out the various objects of the invention.
While I have particularly described the elements best adaptedto perform the functions set 4 forth, it is apparent that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
In a bed covering, a body comprising a single sheet of fabric split longitudinally from one end thereof toa point adjacent the opposite end of said body, slide-fastening means for detachably securing the split portions of the body together, a covering flap having a portion thereof secured tothe body at the upper end of one of the split sections adjacent the split in said body, said covering flap extending beyond the edge of said body and beyond the split portion thereof and adapted to be folded over the ends of the split sections when the latter are secured together to cover the fastening means therefor, and detachable fasteners for-retaining the covering flap in folded position over the edge of the body said body being adapted tolie on a'bed with the side and end edges of'said. body f and unattached to-the bed wherebythe Gnu-1.23 portion of said body at either side of said split be turned back and folded adjacent said opposite end.
