ATTORNEY Patented Nov. l, 1932 PATENT oFFlcE ELVIRA STABZ SHIITH, F NEWARK, NEW JERSEY BED comme Application tiled November 24, 1930. Serial No. 497,622.
This invention relates, generally, to bed covering; and the invention has reference,
more particularly, to a novel form of bed' `unduly chilled, which is apt to lead to colds or other illnesses. y
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a novel bed covering or bed "3 case which is so constructed and arranged as i to remain in desired fixed `position upon a bed and in covering relation to the person using the same, regardless of the restlessness of such person, the said bed covering or case also serving to retain any additional bed clothing used in desired position upon th bed. 1
Another object` vof the present invention lies in the provision of a novel bed case which 3" not only overlies the person using the bed, but which also extends completely under the bed mattress, thereby utilizing the weight of the person together with that of the mattrcss and any additional bed clothing t0 retain the bed case and such additional clothing in desired fixed position upon the bed, the frictional resistance between the bed case and the bed spring serving to prevent'relative movement of the bed case and the spring, Awhich relative movement may be positlvely prevented, if desired, by the use of fastening means adapted to positively tie the bed case in fixed position upon the bed spring. .Another object of the prevent invention "Mis to provide a novel bed covering or bed case having an upper or cover portion which is adapted to be readily parted or opened down the middle, as by the use ofhookless n v`fastening means, to thereby enable the easy iand quick removal o the-person from the bed when desired, or to allow. access tothe mattress and sheeting thereof as for the vpurpose of straightening out such sheeting or for insertlng or removing the mattress and/or sheeting from the bedcase or for airing the same.
'A' fourth object of the present invention l1es m the provision of a novel bed covering l or bed case of the above character which is open at the bottom as well as at the top, there- 00 by enabling ready access to the interior thereof both at the bottom and at the top of the bed and permitting ready adjustment of the mattress or sheeting within the case and easy access to the feet of the bed user, as for the 65 purpose of applying hot water bags thereto, the said open ended case being easily laundered and retained in a sanitary condition.
A fifth object of the present invention is to provide a novel bed covering or bed case of the 7i;
above character having an upper or cover portion provided with a flap at the bottom end thereof, which flap is adapted to be readily tucked around the bottom end of the bed mattress and under the same` and between I6 such mattress and that portion ofthe bed covering or ease which extends under and across the mattress.
Still another object of the present invention lies in the provision of a novel bed cover- Se ing or case which is of extremely simple construction, may be cheaply manufactured, and which is so designed that the user of the bed covering or case will not readily soil the same, thereby reducing laundering expenses to a minimum.
Other objects of this invention, not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood Jfrom the following detailed description of the same. 4 911 The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view with parts broken away showing the novel bed covering or case of this invention as applied to a babys crib.
Fig. 2 isa plan view of the novel bed covering or case, the cover portion thereof being illustrated as parted or in partly open posi- 1m tion.
, aportion of the structure' o U Fig. 7 is a .view similar to Fig. 3 of a sl1ght l -ly modified form of construction, the flap portion of the bed case being broken away.4
` Similar characters of reference are em- A ployed in all of the above described views, to
indlcate corresponding parts.
, Referring now to said drawing, the novel bed covering or case of this invention is illustrated as applied to a babys crib, but it is to be understood that the same is equally applicable to full size beds. The reference numeral l desi, notes a crib having a spring 2 and mattress 3 whichy is equipped with the novelbed covering or bed case 4 of the present invention. This novel bed case or bed covering completely encircles the mattress 3 and any sheeting thereon, thereby utilizing the weight of the attress and the person on the bed to retain the bed case or covering in desired position.
This novel bed case comprises a tie member or subsheet 5 (sce especially Figs. 2 to 5), which subsheet may be made ot muslin or other suitable relatively thin and inexpensive material, and is adapted to underlie mattress 3 and to rest directly upon the spring 2 of the bed. The tie *member or subsheet 5 is preferably offsnbstantially the same size as the mattress 3, thereby completely underlying the entire mattress and vincidentally protecting .the mattress from direct 'contactwith the vspring 2. The tie member or subsheet 5 is preferably provided with a number of tie strings 6 arranged at the corners thereof for the purpose of tying this subsheet directly to the spring 2, to thereby positively hold or retain the subsheet in fixed .position u-ponthe spring 2. l y
Ad 1itional tie strings 6 may be provided intermediate the corner tie strings 6, if deslred, as especially illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, for the purpose of obtaining more complete.
attachment of the subsheet to the spring. It .1s to be understood, however, that the use of the tie strings 6 is not absolutely essential owin to the'fact that the subsheet passes comp etely under the mattress 3, and in some instances these tie strings 'may be omitted al. together.
A Spaced side panelsyor side walls 7 of muslin or other .suitable material are disposed at the sidel edges of the subsheet 5 and cover the e side panels or side walls 7 extend from gater portion'of the sides ofthe mattress 3.
the bottom" or foot endl of the subsheet i toward the to or head end thereof, but terminate short o the top end of this sheet, as illustrated in the drawing. The lower ed e por,- tions of the side panels 7 are sewn to t e side edge portions of the subsheet 5, as especially illustrated in Fig. 5. Preferably a decorative binding or trimming ribbon 8 is sewnover bed case comprising sections 9 and 10. This Y u per or cover portion of the bed case is a apted to overlie the mattress 3 and extends from the foot or bottom ofthe bed toward the top or head end thereof to the saine extent as the-side panels, but terminates short of the top end to leave space for a pillow and to accommodate the head of the bed user. The side panels 7. are of somewhat greater height than the height of the mattress 3 to provide a suitable space above the mattress for receiving theinfant or other erson using the bed, together with such s` eeting and clothing as may be desired.
The sewn uncture of the side panels 7 with the cover portion 9-10 is illustrated as covered 'bythe use of the binding or trimming ribbon 8.. The cover portion 2-l0 has the bottom or foot end thereof extending beyond the bottom end ofthe side panels 7 to provide a dup l2 which is adapted to be tucked around the bottom and. under the mattress 3, as especially illustrated in Fig. e, thereby. completely enclosing the bottom end' of the bed case in use and serving to ireep the bed userls -ieet warm. 'it desired, the ap l2 may be provided with tie strings (not shown.) for retaining the same in place and around the bottom of the mattress.
in the form of the invention illustrated in the gures, wherein the bed covering or case end of the side panels 7 and the cover portion l 9-0. The portion of the flap 'l2 which is tucked under the mattress 3, lies between this mattress and the subsheet 5, and therefore is firml and frictionally gripped' between these mem ers so that the same will not pull out accidentally while in use. The edges of the ap 12, and the bottom and top edges of the side panels 7 are also preferably provided with binding or trimming ribbon 8l 'lhe sections 9 and 10 forming the cover portion of the bed' case of this invention are of substantially the same size and. have their meeting edge portions overlapping oneenother at the center of the case, as especially il- The bottom portion of thesesections 9 andilO forming the flap 12 are directl and rma.- nently sewn together, whereas t e portlons of these sections which overlie the top of mattress 3 are ada ted to be connected or disconnected at will, y y the use of a hookless fastener comprisingr interlockable fastening members 13 attached to the opposite edges of .fastener tapes 14 and 15; tape 14 being sewed to the cover section 9, whereas tape 15,is sewed to the cover Asection 10.
A runner 16 slides on the members 13 and is manipulated by a finger piece17 in a well known manner tol effect attachment of cover sections 9 and 10 or the parting of these sections, Whichever is desired. The fastener tape 14 is sewn to the underside of cover section 9 at a point inwardly of the'edge of this cover section as shown in Fig. 6, so that the edge portion of this cover section completely overlies the fastening members 13 and tapes 14 and 15, therebyl completely hiding the hookless fastener from view when the cover sections are interconnected as illustrated in Fig. 1. Also, the fastener tape 15 is sewn to the upper surface of the cover section 10 at a polnt inwardly of the edge of this cover section so that the edge portion of this cover portion completely underlies the hookless fastener to prevent the same from contacting with the skin of the bed user.
To render the attachment of the cover sections 9 and 10 at the top or head end' of the crib more secure, an auxiliary snap fastener -18 is employed, one-half of this snap fastener being sewed to the cover section 9 and the other half being sewed to the cover section 10. A decorative ribbon or bow 19 overlies that portion of thefastener 18 which is attached to the edge of cover section 9 and this bow serves as an additional covering means for the hookless fastener and especially the finger piece 17 thereof, so that the infant or bed' user will be unable to grasp this finger piece or place f the same in his mouth'.
In use, to apply the novel bed covering or bed case to the mattress, it is merely necessary to place the bed case upon the spring 2 with the tie member 5 resting on the sprlng and then manipulate linger piece ,17 so as to open z be readily sli ped in between subsheet or tie member 5l an the cover portions 9-10. Ordinarily, a sheet or sheeting 20 (see Fig. 5) is placed over the mattress 3 and is tucked under at the sides of the same so as to have Y 'its marginal side portions gripped between the subsheet'or tie member 5 and the bottom of the mattressf The frictional resistance exerted by the bottom ofthe mattress andv by the subsheet 5-upon the tucked under Inarginal side portions ofthe sheeting 20, serves to securely retain this sheeting in desired position u n the mattress.
The in ant is laid upon the sheeting 20 and under the cover portion 9-10, whereupon the sections 9-10 are fastened to ther by means of thehookless fastener an the auxiliary fastener 18. The bottom iap 12 is then tucked under the bottom of the mattress and over the tie member 5, thereby covering and protecting the feet of the infant. Any additional covering that ma. be desirable or neces sary to place upon t e bed, may then be placed upon the bed without danger ofthe same becoming displaced since the cover rtion 9--10 is positively retained in deslred fixed position with respect to the mattress owing to the retainin actionof the tie member 5 and side anelsg?. The additional covering is lace on top of the cover sections 9-10 an will remain where placed and cannot be reached by the -feet of the infant or be kicked out of place. It will be noted that the weight of the mattress together with that of the infant combine to retain the bed case of this invention in correct position. Also, when tie strings 6 are used, additional security against movement is provided.
It will be noted that the use of the hookless fastener enables the cover portion to be readily parted to place the infant in desired position on the bed or to remove him therefrom. The parting of the cover sections 9-10 by use of the hookless fastener, also enables the ready insertion of the mattress into the case and also enables the ready placing of same ma be ver readily laundered when desired. s the t1e member or subsheet 5 underlies the mattress 3, the infant cannot wet the same and therefore the case may be used at long intervals without laundering.
It is not necessary that the-tie member or I' subsheet 5 should underlie the entire mattress. Thus in Fig. 7, the tie member is illustrated as consisting of transverse strips 5' which interconnect thel lower edges of the side panels 7 at the head and foot ends of these panels.
It will be apparent that other fastening means such ashooks, locks, ties and etc. may be used in lieu of the hookless fastener, but suchv other fastening means would not be as easy to operate as the hookless fastener, nor would they prevent the infant from sticking his fingers outwardly through the line of fastening of cover sections 9-10.
As many changes could be made in the above -construction and' many a parently widelyA different embodiments of ts inven.
tion could be made without departin from the scope thereof, it is intended ythat i matter contained in the above descrlption or shown in the vaccomp'an g drawlng shalll be interpreted as illustrativeand not in a limitin sense. 'v
